New Fireball spotted in Midwest

The mid west has witnessed two major fireball events in less than 2 days.

On Thursday (September 26th), the AMS has received more than 730 reports of a large fireball around 7:05 am local time. Witnesses from Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri and Wisconsin reported a bright light moving across the morning sky.

The second Fireball occurred last night September 27th around 11:30 PM local time over central Ohio. The AMS has tagged over 450 witness reports to this event so far and there are still over 400 awaiting review.

Below is a heat map of the sightings. Click the image to view the AMS Fireball Event Map for this fireball.

The fireball was caught on two NASA all sky cameras operated by Bill Cooke of the Meteoroid Environmental Office.

Here is what appears to be a video of the event:

This event has quickly become the AMS’s 3rd most reported event of all time. The Indiana event that occurred earlier in the morning attained the second place spot, but its possibly that title will not be held for very long. Hundreds of witnesses continue to report this latest event in Ohio.

Around 11:30pm September 27, 2013 I had just pulled in my driveway, got out of my truck and was admiring the clearity of the stars in the night sky, when a very large blue streak crossed the sky I’m front of me. It was traveling south to north in the eastern sky. It lasted a full 1-1/2 seconds and seemed to have a vapor trail that stayed in the sky for another 10 seconds.

I saw this in New Baltimore, Michigan on Friday night ~ September 27, 2013! It was a yellow/orange ball that popped out of nowhere high in the Northeastern Sky (Over Lake St. Clair) which was trailing the most amazingly wide and long tail of a turquoise / green / purple color. It fell in somewhat of an arch and seemed to somewhat burst and then was gone! I was just sitting on my porch, looking straight ahead talking on my phone and “poof” there it was out of nowhere and gone in seconds! I could not believe what I saw ~ my legs went numb, my heart was pounding, and I lost my breath. Awesome, yet somewhat spooky!

Did anyone else in Michigan see this?

I saw it in Clinton Township, Michigan

          • It was spotted ove Lake Erie in Dunkirk NY and a there was a gound shake felt 15 ins away up in the hills.

i saw this fireball on the night of 29th sept.in Isoka a small town in Northen Zambia -Africa it did not fit the disciption of an eclipse.

          • Eclipses and fireballs are completely different celestial phenomena. Eclipses are the obscuration of one celestial body by another either by the a shadow or the disk itself. A fireball is a larger than normal meteor seen as a streak of light in the sky.

            I hope this helps!

        • We saw this in Brown City Michigan, just as described above. My husband and I were sitting on the porch star gazing and talking. We were not expecting it, my jaw dropped! It was also seen in Attica, Michigan. My tribe was holding a Native ceremony, when our gatekeeper spotted it, so did two others. They consider this a blessing for our tribe….

        • Saw in Garden City Michigan

        • I was driving on highway near sandusky ohio around 1130-12 when my husband and I saw a huge flash of light then orange/blue ball fly across the sky! I told himI thought Iit was a meteor! So cool never seen one before! :)

        • We were camping at Sterling State Park in Monroe Mi (by Lake Erie)

        • I was lucky enough to see it in the SE sky from Ann Arbor.

      • I saw this too.. wasn’t staring at the sky.. but saw a glimpse.. it was amazing..!!

        • I was driving home from the Red Wings game and about 11:30 PM just north of Monroe, Mi.. We did not see a fire ball, however, the sky did light up green for 3-4 seconds. Looked like lightning with no bolt, we thought this was weird since it was a perfectly clear night.

      • Yep, we saw it out in Brighton, MI!

      • I also seen this in Dayton , Ohio. It was very scarey to say the least.

    • Joshua Davis says: October 1, 2013 at 6:24 pm

I saw it september 27, 2013 at right about 1030 pm central time. I was on my way back home from picking my kids up from there mothers when the sky lit up we thought it was really close to us. I had no clue it was 2 states over. I was driving on interstate between Gilman IL and Rantoul IL when we saw this happen.

    • We saw this from a friends cabin in central Ohio (Greer, Ohio- near Mohican state park). It was traveling from south western sky approximately 240 degrees azimuth. It was first visible about 45 degrees elevation and ended around 30 degrees elevation about 300 degrees azimuth. I’ve seen numerous meteors but nothing as bright or intense as this. There was a smoke trail in the sky several minutes after the event. It was cobalt blue with a bright white edges with a tinge of green and was breaking into numerous pieces… INCREDIBLE!

  2. Almost midnight central time stepped out back facing the south-west direction and seen a long streak across the sky, Lake Cumberland, KY

  3. Cheryl Sherman says: September 28, 2013 at 8:14 am

My husband and I were sitting outside with four of our neighbors in Fishers, IN. We all saw a huge blue ball followed by a bright orange tail that seemed to last for several seconds. Was extremely bright and beautiful!

  4. Janette Marson says: September 28, 2013 at 8:36 am

My boys said they saw it last night around 11(ish) and it lit up the whole farm field as it passed. We are in Jamestown,Ky (Lake Cumberland area).

  5. I saw it driving home on I-81 north. It was spectacular! I thought it was a plane crashing at first! Brilliantly bright, beautiful green and yellow tail… amazing!

  6. I was standing outside on my porch with my husband when I noticed a fire streak across the sky. It lasted for about 2 seconds. I live in southwest Ohio it was around 9:00 PM.

    • The one my daughter and I saw from Lebanon Ohio was between 8-9pm Friday Sept 27th (Eastern Time). It was traveling West to East. was very bright. It lasted several seconds. I am wondering if there were two since this was way before 11:30PM eastern.

      • It was about 9:15 pm, i had just left a meeting that ended at 9 and a few friends were chatting outside when it appeared, watched it travel through the sky.

  7. Ragan Riddle says: September 28, 2013 at 8:53 am

Myself and 3 other people were driving North on I 75 headed from Chattanooga toward Knoxville when we saw a blue streak flash across the sky. It was approx. 11:30 P.M. Cool to know what it was!

  8. Brenda Anzak says: September 28, 2013 at 8:58 am

I saw it last night (the 27th) It lit up my whole deck as it shot across the sky. It was awesome but a little spooky at the same time.

  9. Although we did not see anything in the sky (we were watching TV in the house at the time), we heard and felt a large boom – so significant, in fact, that the concussion shook and rattled our house. I inquired on Facebook to see if any friends experienced a similar situation in the area, and many who were outside did report seeing the object, but many others reported experiencing the concussion. It did sound like a sonic boom, but I had never experienced one at that time of the evening.

    • Where are you located, Bruce?

    • Where are you located? Actually feeling the concussion is a little crazy! I saw it here in Michigan and it was huge and bright. I didn’t see or hear anything but I smelled something burning for like 15 minutes after I saw it.

    • My husband and I heard a loud boom around 1130 last night as well. We live in the Junction City, Ohio area. The noise was significant enough that my husband went outside and checked our property. It felt as though the house shook.

      • I may have seen the same meteor just after 11:30 pm friday night while driving south on Riverview dr north of Parchment Mi. It was in the eastern sky from Kalamazoo Mi. It appeared to break apart while burning up and it was very bright My best guess is that struck the atmosphere over Battle Creek Mi. at at a steep angle the trail only lasted a second or so. It could not have been more than 40 miles away because I was in a ravine looking uphill, at about 35 degrees.

  10. Jessica Holt says: September 28, 2013 at 9:33 am

I live in Creelsboro, KY and saw this late last night. It lit up our entire farm.

My husband and I were driving home on Tunnel Hill Road, New Lexington at 11:33 p.m. It was really dark and then all of a sudden there was a really bright light which made the entire sky light up. It was very strange…looked like an explosion white/ blue. We had never seen anything like this before. We looked for a trail of smoke and rolled the window down to listen for sounds but did not see or hear anything else. We thought there was a plane crash or an explosion at the strip mine we were near. It was very strange. This was in Perry County Ohio.

My daughter and i was sitting outside we saw a blue bright flash across the sky while on the phone with boyfriend in Delaware oh who saw the same thing we did st the same time it was a little freaky

    • My husband and I were driving home to Circleville, Ohio, after attending a football game in McConnelsville. Around 11:30 p.m. in New Lexington, the sky above the treeline lit up bluish-white for only a second. We were perplexed since there were no storms in the area and we knew the flash did not flicker like lightning and was more blue in color than lightning usually appears.

  12. I was out in Amelia OH, sitting around a fire when the ground lit up. I looked up to the sky to see a bright flash just shoot south to north. Had to double check with the people i was with to confirm we all saw the same thing.

  13. I live in Adams county southern Ohio…a meteorite or satellite burst through the atmosphere, I heard a loud boom preceded by a blue streak and white flash…then the vapor trail lasted about 10 seconds…fire trucks scrambled to a nearby farm where a fire was reported from a fireball from the sky..around peebles area…crazy!

    • James, I live in Hocking County. Anything on the news about meteor recovery and or the fire? I tried to google it, and couldn’t find anything. Interesting it is in the same county as the Serpent Mound Crater.

  14. We were driving home in Marietta Ohio at about 11:30pm. We had stopped at a stop sign under tree cover so we didn’t get to see the actual fireball, but the sky did light up. I thought that it couldn’t be lightning because no rain had been forecast. The thought of a meteor crossed my mind, so I was glad to see the reports this morning to confirm my experience. There sure seems to be a lot of these sightings lately …….

  15. amazing reading this i see many folks saw different colours
    Blue…Orange….Yellow…..Green

  16. I was in Ohio on st.rt. 78 I was 2 other girls we all seen it! It look like a bright blue light taking off ( almost from the ground it seemed ). It looked at is it were right beside the car! We even shielded ourselfs because it was so bright! There was a blue trail the lasted in the sky several seconds after the light had disappeared into the night!

    • My Husband came home at 12.00 am and told me he seen the brightest falling star or Meteor and said he never seen anything like it and that was in Rising sun Ohio !!! He said it went from white to all different colors even said the car in front of him stopped!!

  17. My Son and I witnessed this last night in Marengo, Ohio

  18. I saw it last night as well. I kept telling my husband that was the greatest shooting star I had ever seen!

  19. I saw it in eastgate Ohio it was a bright flash over the hole sky .

  20. My son witnessed one around 9pm last night too, a fire streak across the sky for several seconds. He said it was very bright. We are Just North West of Dayton

  21. Seen it in Roseville Ohio was quite the sight. Was around 11:30, thought someone turned the sun back on!!!

  22. I was in Wheelersburg Ohio, and we saw a HUGE bright orange shooting star go over us. Then later a small on hit nearly 30 feet from us!

  23. I had just put my things in the passenger side, and was walking around to the driver side from the rear of blazer, when a bluish light shone down on me. I looked up and saw it alluminated the tree directly over head and was gone. Heard someone shout ” What the the heck was that?” and looked around and saw no one, so I assumed it was someone playing with some kind of flash light. Later when I was at work (Security Officer for Fed-ex at Rickenbacker Airbase), someone was leaving the security area and mentioned the light, and how everyone around the planes looked into the sky, and if I heard what the flash of light was, that everyone had seen it in the sky. Then I wondered just what was it I saw at home getting in my car going to work? This may explain it.

  24. My son was pulling into our driveway after the football game – it was around 11:30-11:35. I heard him outside screaming, “OMG!! Mom!” So I ran out and he was going on about some meteor racing from the south to the north with a bluish hue and a orangish tail. He said it was so fast – but beautiful. We live in NE Ohio (Niles). When my husband got home at 1:15, he said he seen a large bluish flash in the western sky as he was driving west on I-90 (coming out of Erie, Pa). He didn’t get to see the whole meteor however.

  25. I saw it also near rt 78 in Ohio! It looked green to me and appeared to be falling downward. I was in my car but I didn’t hear anything. It was very bright, even down in the hollow! Very cool that so many others saw it!

  26. Saw it last night when driving north on us 23 just north of Ann Arbor michigan. I commented to my wife who was riding with me, but she did not see it (using I phone at the time)

  27. I happened to be outside, in Munfordville, KY and looking toward the sky in that direction. I had thought the color of the streak was blue to aquamarine in color, and thought it might be a firework, but the angle and presentation of it didn’t make sense to be a firework. I had hoped someone else saw it so I could determine its origin, because it was unique compared to other things I have seen before in the night sky.

  28. coming home from Barbarton Oh to Creston Oh only a 20 min drive we seen the flashes of light thought it was heat lightening and was very strange at 1130 at night and there was more than one flash

At appoximatley 3:00pm daytime-central over NAPERVILLE, ILLINOIS I witnessed a white fireball that temporarily equaled the brightness of the afternoon sun. I saw this while driving on the way to a doctors appointment, and mentioned the sighting to the two secretaries in my doctors office. The fireball left a white daytime condensation trail, and the fireball at its peak brightness, and with an initial western bearing trajectory, made an abrupt southernly turn of almost 90 degrees, and clearly fell straight to the ground somewhere in central illinois. I have been an amateur astronomer for 15 years, have been witness to hundreds of night time white meteors streaking across the sky, and several daytime green meteors. However this is the first time I have ever seen a white fireball in the daylight atmosphere and the first time I have ever seen a meteor make an abrupt 90 degree trajectory turn. I am absolutley certain that this fireball is now a meteorite, and on the ground somewhere within 100 miles south of Naperville illinois. It did not create a bollide, and is likely one solid piece. It is almost certainly related to the event witnessed over ohio, for some type of sporatic meteor shower.

i live in the city limits of dayton, oh. was out on my deck with some old buddies and one of them and myself happened to be looking at the right part of the sky when it happened. from my vantage point it was moving roughly from the south to the north, and downward at about maybe a 20 degree angle up from the horizon. very bright, very spooky.

immediate thought was a large firework, but couldn’t be that cuz no sound. then thought maybe a plane exploding/crashing, but seemed to large AND distant to be man-made. then figured, meteor or comet or whatever. which apparently it was. i’ve seen the occasional shooting star once or twice, and satellites, but this was huge and super-bright!

  32. We were at the haunted hayride in springboro ohio and saw it

  33. Julie Recker says: September 28, 2013 at 2:59 pm

Dupont Ohio 45837 lit up the sky for several seconds. Multiple witnesses at town party. Pretty amazing !

  34. I was on a boat fishing last night at Alum Creek in Ohio. I was looking down at my line when the boat and water when the boat and water reflected the flash and I looked up and saw it streak across the sky. Where I was the trail seemed to glow for about 10 to 15 seconds after. Amazing to see in the dark while fishing.

  35. Saw it around 1130 Bowling Green, Ky

  36. Christine Pompa says: September 28, 2013 at 3:29 pm

I was at a Walmart in Ebensburg PA with my daughter. It was late and quiet, not a lot of other people around to witness it. I was unloading groceries into the back of my van and I just happened to grab a bag out of my cart and turned around to place the bag in my van when I saw this amazing bluish green light, light up the sky just above the tree line at the back of the parking lot. It only lasted a second or two before the light went below the trees leaving a yellowish trail behind it. If I had turned around a second later I would have missed it. It was an amazing thing to witness. It’s hard to believe it was so far away, it was so big and bright I thought it was something that happened maybe 10 miles away not 200 miles!

    • I was traveling south on HWY E approaching HWY 28 in Eastern Wisconsin, Sheboygan county, and around 10:30 PM central time I noticed a Blue/Green fireball to the South-East, the fireball burst after about one second or so in a bright, possibly white, colored explosion. A yellow trail remained for about a half second or so. The trajectory seemed to be upper left to lower right and the angle relative to the horizon appeared to be about 75 degrees. However, it was difficult to tell if it was moving toward or away from me due to the predominantly vertical trajectory.

  37. I saw it last night when I was driving home from the airport between Dayton and Troy, Ohio. It completely lit up the sky for 10 secs or so!

  39. My husband and I were sitting outside around our firepit when the very bright blue light and trail lit up the sky. We are in Columbus, Ohio near OSU campus area and the path of the meteor appeared to be nearly directly overhead. Quite amazing!

  40. I was leaving a friends house about 11:30pm in Crown Point Indiana. Zero city lights in this location. I did see a large Meteor to the east I believe. I’m not great with directions. Im trying to figure it out by I-65

  41. I was in my driveway around 11:30 loading my jeep to go to storage… I was speaking with my husband who was across town on his way home from work I was facing my garage when out of nowhere everything around me lit up blue and my heart sank being outside alone I was startled i whipped around and my husband and I at the same time said whoa omg! he didnt get to see the ball when I seen it it was bright orange and looked like it was going upward not falling it had miles of tail behind it that lingered so long it was hard to believe unfortunately I have very large trees in my yard that it disappeared behind I am a sky watcher not professional or anything I just enjoy myself a good meteor shower this was like nothing I have ever seen I thought for sure it was a space ship of some kind lol very cool very spooky and I hope to witness it again wish i lived in Illinois instead of Bellville ohio cause I hear they have been very common there lately =]

  42. Wasn’t extremely bright but it was big.

  43. My daughter was in TN near the KY/TN State Line in her vehicle traveling north into KY and saw this event last night. She was so amazed and somewhat “unbelievable” until I read this. When I showed her this report, I got a big “I Told You so!!”. Tom in TN 38549

  44. My daughter & I were driving home from Madison Plains High School to Gahanna, OH when it went *right* over our heads on Rt. 56, near I-71. At first, we thought it was a blown transformer since the sky was perfectly clear, but it just kept getting brighter until it finally fizzled out. We weren’t even sure it was real until her boyfriend texted from London, OH, to make sure he hadn’t imagined it too.

For such a shock, it really was gorgeous! I haven’t seen that shade of blue in Nature since our Caribbean cruise several years ago.

  45. I did see a large fire work type flash around 10:30 but that would be too early. I was driving south east on 2 in Indiana close to Hebron

  46. I witnessed the event in a farm field Mount Perry Ohio . Streaking blue beautiful sight. Lasted about 20 seconds .

  47. Last night, sometime between 11:27 and 11:30 PM, I was driving home from Ada, Ohio and saw a quick streak across the sky, followed by a very bright flash that seemed to fill the whole sky.

It came through sky and looked as if had fallen last night in park city ky it was huge

  49. Saw it as well around 11:30, saw the sky light up. It looked like a huge shooting star around Pandora, Ohio.

  50. I reported seeing this meteor last night and later found out that people I know died from the fire it caused to a house. An elderly couple was killed near my home after the meteor crashed near their home setting the house on fire. Flames were 70 ft high and the couple died of smoke inhalation in Peebles, Ohio.

Although eyewitnesses saw the meteor crash to the ground their the fire chief is saying there is no impact crater so it wasn’t the meteor that caused it. Do meteors always cause impact craters especially if they are small and hit structures?

  66. Saw bright white/blue fireball dash across the early dusk sky at approximately 6:55 p.m. (central time) , close to hwy 55 and 130 south intersection in Tullahoma, TN. Have never seen one before. To me, it seemed very close to the earth,
much closer to the ground than small aircraft would travel. 9-28-13

  67. I saw a bright meteor at about 6:55am, 9/28/13 visible in the southern sky from Columbus Ohio. I would not have called it a fireball, but it was very bright.

  68. I live close to Winchester, VA in the northwestern part of VA close to the WV line, and I saw a large green flare go straight down to the horizon. I thought it might be a meteor as it didn’t last very long.

  69. I live outside Shelby Ohio, and I was driving home from Mickey Mart when the whole sky lit up bright blue. I looked out the window and saw a huge ball flashing what I saw to be blue and purple. It was gone within a few seconds, but it left a bright burn streak in the sky that glowed orange/brown that stayed there for quite a while. I had no idea what it was until I got home the next morning and my Mom told me there was a huge meteor siting that was all over the news. Until I heard about this I was a bit scared because I had no idea what it was.

  70. I was pulling in to the parking lot at the super 8 in Grayson KY last night at about 11:40 pm when I saw a bright flash of white light and then a green light shoot across the sky it was the most amazing thing ever

My daughter and her boyfriend were at Kings Island with some friends and they saw it there. They were sitting on a bench talking and saw the light streak across the sky and graze the Eiffel Tower. Needless to say that’s what everyone at Kings Island was talking about the rest of the night!

  72. I was driving home, around 11:30ish in Slippery Rock, PA (about an hour north of Pittsburgh) traveling west and I saw this bright green light streak across the sky. From my car it seemed to be rocketing towards the ground. It was very cool and intense to witness.

  73. Last night my husband took the dog out at 10:30pm and saw a huge white flash then sparkling fragments, no sound. He was shocked by what he saw and the hair on his arms and legs was standing up. Tonight SEPT 28th, we were driving back from the store together at 9:30 and we saw ANOTHER ONE! I have to believe him now, I saw it with my own eyes! Spectacular! From Portsmouth, NH

  74. I’m in Chillicothe, Ohio, and I saw what I believed to be a comet at 8:15 pm Friday night. I still have the text messages that show the 8:15 pm time that I sent to several people asking if they saw it. This is odd considering most of the reports claim an 11:30 pm sighting and noises. Chillicothe is in southern Ohio.

  75. My daughter’s and I were on 70 west heading towards Columbus about 11:30. The sky suddenly lit up like a giant lightening strike. A bright blue light streaked across the sky then flashed again and was gone. The tails trail was visable for a little longer. It was all very surreal. My daughter’s kept saying it was the biggest falling star they every saw!

  77. At approximately 11:30 pm on 9/27, I was driving south on I395, just outside DC. I saw this over the Air Force Memorial – falling straight down. The flash was mostly green. I thought I was crazy – but this must be what I saw.

  80. My father and I saw it on our way home from upper Arlington, the whole sky turned blue and we heard something that sounded most like thunder so we figured that the weather was being bi polar and the skies had struck lightening. Despite the fact that there were no clouds whatsoever. We only later discovered that it was a meteor when we saw it on the news the next morning!

  81. I saw it too, last night, from Springfield, Ohio, sometime after 11 PM. It was in the eastern sky, traveling at a low angle, seemed too large for a shooting star and was a pale orange color. On Friday night (the night before) I saw the sky seem to turn to daylight for a split second. Anyone else see that? It was also after 11 PM as I was driving east.

I saw the fireball on last night September 28, 2013 over Knoxville, TN. A friend and I were driving down Rutledge Pike (Hwy 11W) around 7:30pm when we saw it. It was beautiful and exciting to see.

  83. Traveling west, my friend Kenny and I were going home from work on US Rt. 50 Clarksburg, WV and watched the ball of fire roll on from our left across the sky and burn out. An awesome site!

At first I thought I was seeing things and then it got brighter. This happened last night around 730-800 pm est. It had a very bright glow and then it burst into many pieces as it reminded me of the NASA explosion in the 80s I was just a kid then.

  85. We were at Bowling Green Kentucky last night 9/28/2013 when a meteorite with a long tail crossed the sky right about nightfall. NOT closer to midnight!! It was clearly visible and very bright for a little over ten seconds before it finally disappeared over the horizon. It’s trajectory seemed to be due Northwest since the sun was setting to our direct front/slightly right (about 2 o’clock directionally).
There were several witnesses to this as the stadium was full of observers.
I didn’t even think to make a wish! LOL

  87. I was around Custar ohio on a motorcycle, headed east and seen it with no obstruction, it lit up the night, like a firework, and streaked across the southern sky. I have seen quite a few but this one was the brightest and closest ever, you could even hear it over my bike and radio, just a little

I live in Great Falls, MT, and just the week before last, two days in a row, I saw something eerily similar to what was posted though what I saw was smaller – the first one was blue with a reddish tail, the second one the same with white tail – I’ve been watching the skies ever since and I’ll keep you posted…

  89. Wow, I’m so happy I finally found something online about this. I was driving with my boyfriend around that time when I saw a blue / green shooting light and then poofed away looking like there was almost smoke/vapor left over afterwards. He didn’t see it, no one i asked had seen it and I couldn’t find anything on it until NOW! I didn’t know what to call it (shooting star or meteorite) I thought I was going crazy. It was so beautiful and I’m so lucky to have seen it!

  90. Nicole Carnifax says: September 29, 2013 at 2:33 pm

My husband and I saw it around 11:30 pm leaving Blossom Music Center in Northeast Ohio. It lit the sky up with a green color and had a small ball of fire. It was not very high in the sky, maybe as high as the power lines. It was craziness! Never saw anything like it.

  91. I was driving east on Parkstown Rd in La Grange, NC, 1 mile from the Wayne/Greene county line at 11:30 PM and saw a bright blue flash to my north, I couldn’t see a steak due to the trees beside the road, but it was definitely something very bright, very high in the sky.

  92. My daughter and I were walking last night around 7-8pm and we saw a fireball travel across the sky with a trail of fire behind it. It was beautiful and not very h igh in the sky. Definately not a firework. We saw this in Powell TN .

Saw something. Wasn’t sure cause it seemed so low. I’m in West Maryville TN. Lasted longer than Ive seen before. Like a sparkler shooting sparks with big tail. Craziest thing I’ve seen. Happen around 7:45pm.

I was in Warren, MI. It was sometime between 11pm and midnight. I was standing in my brother’s driveway facing east when something very bright flashed to my right. It was bright enough to illuminate the entire southern sky and appeared to be mostly white with a bluish hue. I turned to face it and saw a trail of bright yellow that was clearly fire. I knew it was no ordinary shooting star. The entire event lasted perhaps one second. I took it to be a large object that had penetrated our upper atmosphere and landed fairly close. That it seems to have struck somewhere in Ohio is consistent with my observation.

  96. I was in Hudson, OH (Summit County) that night. At 11:34PM on Sep 27, I saw a green glow in the southwest sky, possibly moving northwest, with a white trail behind it.

  97. We saw it is Brighton MI. It was bright green.

  98. A group of us were standing around a camp fire in Clyde, OH. I was looking west when the ground turned bright green and blue, I turned to the south and caught the end of it through the trees. Amazing!

  99. I was in my garage with a friend around 11:30 when I saw a bright blue

  100. Cedarville, OH. ~ 11:30pm on the 27th.
I was working on my boat with a friend when I saw a bright blue flash in my peripheral vision. I asked my friend if he had seen it, but he had not. I had no idea what the bright blue flash was, so I was very interested to hear about this tonight.

  103. My daughter and I were driving thru the village of Batavia and we saw this very bright fireball shoot very fast in front of us.It was so shocking I slammed on the breaks and my daughter was so excited she said this was the best night of her life! I wasn’t sure if it disenagrated or hit the yard I never been so close to something moving that fast and bright.

  104. We were at Lynn Drive-In, in Strausburg, Ohio, when we saw it streak across the sky. At first we thought it was a shooting star aka meteorite until the large flash. Its strange to see so many of these are happening here in Ohio and so consecutively. What I find very coincidental is the fact there were seven drones photographed over CAK Friday. Definitely gets the mind spinning….

  105. last friday i left my art studio in harvard illinois and was driving east. as i got into mchenry which is about 50 miles northwest of chicago i saw a shooting star falling almost straight down and glowed emerald greenish in color. it left a long vapor trail. i looked at my clock and it was around 11:30. i thought how lucky i was to see it because in a few more seconds i turned south and might not have been looking that way. i didn’t see any other reports from illinois, but i saw it !

  106. I was at king hookah smoking lounge in boardman Ohio when I seen this thing in the sky happened so fast didn’t catch the colors was bright though and I live around a lot of lights

It was crazy how big this fireball was! I was standing in an outside line at a haunted house in Middletown, Ohio and I was looking towards the Northeast sky and there it was. It was so bright that I thought it was a firework! It lasted for about 2-3 seconds and then left a trail that lasted in the sky for almost another 10 seconds. I have never saw anything like this before in my life, it was awesome!

I was outside playing with a new camera… if I had JUST waited 10 MORE SECONDS to have snapped the snap; I could’ve had a picture of it….
I thought it was a leftover Roman Candle or flare gun…
saw a green fireball streak across the northeastern sky, I was at a buddy’s house about 4-5 miles southwest of Glasgow KY, just off 31-E.

  109. I am in Windham, Maine and I saw a bright blue ball falling from the sky down into the woods while I was sitting outside talking to my sister! This was Saturday, September 28th around 10pm.

  110. I was driving just one-mile north of Port Columbus International Airport (Columbus/Gahanna, Ohio –heading westward around 11:33 PM), and witnessed a brilliant blue light that lit up what seemed to be the entire sky. It wasn’t directional like a bolt of lightning and was introduced by a loud boom similar to a transformer exploding, but no residual noise as with thunder. Quite astonishing, but I was bewildered until this blog. Glad to share the experience!

  111. My dad passed in September last year. Shooting stars were always our thing. That very night I asked out loud that if dad was with me to send me a shooting star. I looked up and bam I saw that fireball and it was completely cloudy. I was shocked. It was like nothing I had ever seen before. I knew it was my dad was my father.

  112. Me, my son & godfather all witnessed this heading towards grant county IN/15 after his football game. It lit up the sky, l never have seen anything like it. It was very bright green & looked so close. There was no mistaking that as any fireworks. It was very pretty & well we was discussing science before we seen this, with my son, very ironic & he said you know what does it mean when it burns green? Copper

  113. I was fishing on Lake St. Francis near Lancaster Ontario at the time and saw it from here.

I told one of the people I know who knows more about these things and he said to me congratulations you have seen you first fireball and I looked at hime weird and he said to me if you really want to learn more contact the rockland county astrological club.

  119. Approx. 11:30pm Sept 27th, Friday. Milford Center, OH. Sitting on a tailgate with my lovey….almost looked like someone was setting off fireworks! Blinding white flash, muffled fizzling “boom,” and a beautiful tail. Looked like it was directly above us!

  120. My cousin and I were just returning home from one of our concerts and saw what looked like lightning. When we got out of the vehicle, the sky was perfectly clear and starry…we couldn’t figure it out. We were talking for a little bit and all of a sudden, there were two booming sounds, like something had exploded. The whole thing was mystifying. Glad to find out what it was!

  121. I saw this driving home through Goshen IN. Startled me as it was so bright and then disappeared quickly. Appeared to to be in the Northeastern Sky.

  122. Saw this from western pa, half hour north of pittsburgh

  123. We were driving in northeastern Ohio and at around 11:30 my son and I were both shocked to see the entire sky light up with a blueish hue. So glad to know what it was.

  124. On September 27th, I saw the most amazing thing I have ever seen in my life! Chatting on the phone after 11 o’clock I saw this blue light in the sky, so much brighter than a shooting star. Just wish the whole family could’ve see it!

On 9/27/13 My husband and I were talking in our drive around 11:00PM and I saw a bright light and looked up. It was a huge ball with a very long trail of light. I saw bright blue, orange, green and white. It traveled over our house and I watched as it appeared to be falling or trailing over the Zaleski Forrest area in Southern Ohio. My daughter ran out of the house as I saw it because she saw the sky light up and asked what happened and I told her I thought a meteor just went by. It was so close and huge in the sky. I was truly amazed and in awe as I have never seen anything like it. I am glad it was confirmed and I wasn’t imagining it. My husband turned only in time to see the remnants of the trail. It really lit up the night. I had just commented to him there were a lot of stars out.

  126. My husband and I woke up to our dogs barking -more like howling, incessantly- at close to 3a.m., September 30, 2013, in Nova Scotia. The sky was mostly clear, with only patchy fog, and to the north, we saw a very bright light -no movement, no sound -round, big. We seem to have caught the last of it, but it was very bright and seemed -yes, big, when we saw it for a moment, and we thought if the dogs had seen it -looking like the moon, only in a strange place, for the few minutes they were barking, before we got there, well, bingo, I would’ve barked if I saw that, We almost wondered if it was a supernova. -I made a point to get up and look outside again tonight at about the same time, but it’s raining here -dogs are snoozing, happily -and sensibly, and there are no second moon-like things out tonight. We’re wondering if anyone else saw this, or knows what it might have been.

  127. I saw it around 11:30 or 12:00 Friday night. I’m about 18 miles south of Hot Springs NC. It came in low over the mountain tops and was a beautiful green color. No sound associated with it. I’m finally vindicated !!! Everyone said I was seeing things.

  128. We saw this from Birmingham Michigan last Friday! It was the most amazing thing of nature I’ve witnessed first hand!

  130. My dad caught something on camera at 7:51 PM, Friday 09/27/13… It didn’t leave a trail it just got really bright and flickered out, lasting about 4 seconds. He thinks it was a supernova. I wonder if this is the same thing. this was in Tifton, GA.

Saw something similar on the way home from work this morning around 1:50am est. Was on 127 heading from Frankfort KY to Lawrenceburg KY. Greenish blue ball with what looked like an orange tail. Biggest meteor I’ve ever seen if that’s what it was. Never seen one through my windshield before.

Was at a backyard party on West Oakland Rd., about a block from Basset Rd. in Bay Village Ohio.
Saw the second of the two events. Bright green. Initially assumed it was fireworks. It was in the south, moving from east to west at less than 10 degrees from the horizon. Surprizing duration. I was lucky. Only one other person in our group happened to be looking in that direction, although I heard shouting from people several houses away.

I was in the backyard in Ashville,Ohio facing south at the firepit in the backyard. I did not see the meteor as it was behind my field of vision. The darkness became intense silverfish light. My wife and her friend were walking North on the street and saw the fireball come in West to East.

  139. I witnessed this in Gibraltar Michigan on the canal during a party on my friend’s dock late at night on the 27th. It was bright enough to light up every house on the water like a street light blowing out or a strobe light.

  140. I WAS SITTING ON MYK DECK AROUND 11:30PM WHEN THIS RED AND YELLOW FIREBALL CAME STREAKING ACROSS THE SKY BETWEEN THE TREES. U BELEIVABLE… WAITED TO HEAR A CRASH. NEVER HEARD ANYTHING ABOUT IT ON THE NEWS.THEY SURELY AREN’T TALKING ABOUT IT THEN…FROM KETTERING OHIO

  142. We were in Blue Creek Ohio about a 20 minute drive to Peebles, Ohio. There were 4 of us sitting outside watching a campfire. When the sky lit up, my son said “Look at that” a bright blueish white streak went through the sky , it lit up the entire back yard, it was so bright it almost hurt your eyes looking at it. He has a pole with a light with a sensor to come on when it gets dark that was on then when it came by it and even put the light out it was so bright. We heard later it hit a house in Peebles and two older people were killed by smoke inhallation. This occurred Sept. 27 @ 11:30.

I went outside on a beautiful clear night to get fresh air. I saw a huge red glowing object with yellowish orange border float over the sky too high for a small plane. This was at Indian Lake Ohio. I was alone and just dumfounded! Thought sure it was a UFO as nothing was on the news that I saw. This was the end of Sept. I just now saw this online. Will never forget that. It was traveling southeast around 10 PM. It was moving like a gigantic bowl of jello.
