January 3, 2014 (UT) - 72 meteors were observed from Tierra del Sol, So California starting at 07:00 (UT) on January 3d with 10 minute brakes at 09:00 & 11:00 (UT). 15 Sporadic & 57 Quadrantids meteors were documented. The Quadrantids ranged from -2 to 4th magnitude with most averaging 1st to 2nd in brightness. Various lengths of trains, with no colors and medium speeds. 6 exhibited brightness of greater than 0 (zero). From my vantage point the main radiant was centered between northern Booties and Coma Berenice’s (Melote 111). Of the 57 Quadrantids the following were observed per hour (local time): 23:00 to 00:00 - 1 Quad; 01:00 to 02:00 - 5 Quads; 02:00 to 03:00 - 12 Quads; 03:00 to 04:00 - 17 Quads & 04:00 to 05:00 - 22 Quads. 4 Quad meteors exhibited smoke trails with maximum duration remaining visible for ¼ to ½ second, with a -2 lasting for almost 2 seconds. Most showed a 5-10 degree long trails with no fragmentation. Out of the 15 sporadics, a majority had fast velocity and ranged from 1st to 4th magnitude and exhibiting no color. 2, (-1 & -2) exhibited smoke trails that remained visible for ¼ to ½ seconds. No fireballs were seen and observations ended at 13:05 (UT).
