I have been observing meteor showers since I was a... kid. (thanks dad). I have seen "Shooting Stars" from Yellowstone to the Everglades. This was the most spectacular I have ever seen. It lasted for seconds instead of a blink of an eye and it stretched across the horizon. I want to follow it to the impact sight and make a fortune off the find!!!!!!! I have been observing meteor showers since I was a kid. (thanks dad). I have seen "Shooting Stars" from Yellowstone to the Everglades. This was the most spectacular I have ever seen. It lasted for seconds instead of a blink of an eye and it stretched across the horizon. I want to follow it to the impact sight and make a fortune off the find!!!!!!! it was strait off the meteorite and burned for less than a second after it passed. I observe the meteor showers in this area every year and this is much brighter than anything I have ever seen previously. It was inspiring. I made notes on my cell as soon as it happened. I only wish I was recording it as it transpired. IT WAS AWESOME!!!!!! I should go look for the cast off. Thanks meteorite hunters. (Science Channel)...... Show more |

Apparent magnitude was far greater than normal cel... estial bodies, save the moon. I do not know how clouds in the meteor path or in the line of sight between the meteor and observer relate to observed brightness. Fireball appeared through a cloud layer. Flash may have been due to suddent change in visibility due to increased visibility as meteor passed out of clouds. Show more |

I look for reports in the local media but did not ... find anything. I was going to contact "Janet.L.Anderson@nasa.gov" to inquire about this (as MSFC is in Huntsville, AL) when I realized there was a tab to report a sighting so, I did not contact her. towards the Earth at almost vertical trajectory. The event from this point on lasted less than a second. All of it probably about 1.5 seconds. The exact time was between 5:57 and 6 PM on Tuesday February 21, 2002. It was intense enough to catch my attention as I was walking away from COSTCO grocery approaching my car not particularly looking at the sky. In retrospect, given the elevation and time of day, I think that the color was perceived and the object was probably man-made. It might had been the result of the Sun reflected on the surface of the object that gave the reminiscence of amber/yellow. Most likely this was space debris rather than a meteor. The object looked like it hit something or disintegrated at re-entry with the Earth atmosphere. During the short observation it had a trail that looked the same color as the fireball. (not after but during it) and two-thirds its path it seemed to split into two distinct paths. The object split resulted in one following the path and the alternate one taking a more aggressive down fall towards the Earth at almost vertical trajectory. The event from this point on lasted less than a second. All of it probably about 1.5 seconds. The exact time was between 5:57 and 6 PM on Tuesday February 21, 2002. I was in my car with my daughter parking at the gr... ocery store. We both saw the light. It was about as big as my thumb nail when I fully extend my arm out and look at it from that distance. It had a hazy cast, but was a pretty bright light with a hint of green in the front end. It was too big to be a shooting star, and it went slightly down and diagonally it was gone before it reached the horizon. The light traveled in the air. I am not sure if what I was watching was the terminal flash. It got to a point in th sky and just disappeared. Show more |

It came from behind me to my left. I watched it pa... ce my vehicle and pass me by very fast It was in a westbound downward trajectory. It seemed to be an object on fire. Flames streaming around off the front. They didn't appear blue to me however, but like fire. it streamed a tail and seemed to hold together until it winked out. No explosion, No flash. It was the largest and closest shooting star I have ever seen. I thought it was an airplane crashing at first. It was very disturbing and amazing at the same time. it was glowing and very brief. Please keep in mind that "some experience" means i... nfrequent views of the moon with my own 5" reflector scope (celestron) purchased as a spotting scope to observe offshore sea life--whales, sea otters, birds, etc. Have only looked through a "real" scope once--at Lowell to observe Saturn. Have seen meteors and a handful of meteor showers at night quite a few times, but never before in sunny, broad daylight. I suppose it could have been a satellite falling out of a decayed orbit, but I do not have the expertise to distinguish meteor from satellite signatures, if that is even possible with the unaided eye. If this had been a night event, I would have regarded it as too common to warrant reporting. Keep in mind that the total visible length of time of this event was almost within the Show more |

This fireball was so bright green that I first tho... ught it was a flare from an offshore ship, but it definitely was descending not ascending and I don"t think that green trailing yellow sparks is a standard marine signal. Plus, the terminal flash was bright orange behind the very distant clouds, and there is no rain or lighting associated with those clouds accordinf to NOAA's current radar image. Te terminal flash completely backlit the distant clouds out over the Gulf. Pretty extraordinary fireball. Second largest one... I've ever seen. Distinctive in its bright green color. It appeared that there might have been a flash below the treeline, but the fireball disappeared under the treeline at about 10 degrees above the horizon A glowing train of orange sparks that rapidly dissipated Show more |

What i saw that moment was spectacular
I was so am... azed whenever I see a very important event of my life. Last time I saw a shooting star whenever I drive back to Sarasota between 20:45 to 21:00
I'm so lucky indeed. That was the most fascinating experience of my life especially this special day February 14th:) sweet<3 from bright white which the ball has a tail at it's end part when fading towards the ground but burst into green and fading orange color after it disappeared. I don't understand why I haven't seen or read an... ything about it in the news - it was pretty spectacular The tail appeared to be fragmented. Not the green ball though...and it just disappeared. The red, fragmented tail curved behind a very bright green ball. I just happened to be looking at the sky due West of our house, having dinner on our lanai. It was so fast! I thought it might have been fireworks - but it was just this one display. It was amazingly bright and colorful. Never seen anything like it. Wish I knew what it was! Show more |

This is the third one I've seen in 3 months, all ... around the 14th of the month. First one I saw was east to west, directly overhead, for probably 5-10 seconds from horizon to horizon almost on November 14th. The second one, all I caught was the last moments before impact flash southeast of this position with a terminal flash of greenish, whitish, pinkish colors that lasted for only a second or two. The second happened sometime in the middle of December. And well, you have the full report on todays. Show more |

As the pieces fell, I ran inside to get my camera ... and called up to my friend who I was visiting and asked him to quickly look out the window. I clicked a picture of the pieces that remained visible in the sky and the remaining smoke trails. My friend saw the pieces as well from the 2nd story window. I am used to occasional fireworks in the city sky...this was no firework in motion or in its flaming bigness, quite a gorgeous sight...almost could say I wish I left fumbling with the camera for a different moment in time!! I do have a photo of it however grainy that shows the remaining glowing pieces as two lights amidst the smoke trails. I can email it to the AMS if interested. Thanks! I saw only the fragmentation of the meteor and the flaming pieces falling in a dance spiral. Fortunately the front door faces a large horizon and for some reason I happened to walk outside as the fragments were falling. There was a bit of a thin cloud cover (it's L.A.) but as the pieces fell, they were clearly on fire and producing smoke. dark charcoal grey at the top of the trail and lighter toward bottom of horizon...this was a multiple fireball experience witnessed after the breakup as they "wafted/danced" like burning coals as they fell. Took one photo of captured two of the fireballs on the picture and the smoke trails. At first there were multiple fireballs about 6 or 7... but by the time I ran back from getting my camera inside there were only two left in the sky, and the remaining smoke trails. On the verge of an absurd description, it's movement was almost like "lava underwater meets feathers on air". Show more |

I'm not sure of what I saw. It was a brief blue st... reak that looked like a signal flare or a firework. But it was 4:15am on a Monday morning in a suburban area. It's highly unlikely it would have been a flare or a firework (It didn't make any noise). I asked an astronomer at Northwestern University and he said it could very well have been a meteorite. I've seen them before. Although this happened quickly, it was slower than the ones I've seen before. It seemed like it split in two, but I couldn't be sure. By the time my mind registered it, it was over. It looked like a signal flare or the tail end of a firework. I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me. I just caught it out of the corner of my eye but I saw a blue streak. No smoke. Just a brief glowing train. Show more |

Like lightning I remember thinking no human could create that sound. Thought a transformer may have blown. However, this was much loder. I could hear dishes rattle. I was inside. It was quick. I would say the loud boom took me by such surprise the slight flash from the window was an after thought.
I did see a strong bright light in the sky around 8:30 or 9:00 pm, before midnight 2/13, it was bright enough to catch my eye. It was steady, did not go away. I assumed an airplane at first but it was too bright. Settled on the assumption it was a satelite. The object had a bright green core at the front an... d a very long trail behind. As it was falling it left a very long trail of burning debris in it's wake. Overall the size of the object was extremely large. The flash occurred after about 2-5 seconds of viewing time and was extremely bright. I could see the object burning up and fragmenting very clearing in a trail that tapered behind it a long way. The train was green with a visible fireball within it of a red/orange color. Show more |

I've seen many spectacular meteors but nothing th... at approached this. It was reminiscent of some of the famous fireballs you see on tv documentaries that are caught on security cams, etc. Amazing. I'ts a very dark night (sighting at 1:43 AM Eastern) with the moon just above the tree line to the E/SE. Sighting began almost due North or possibly just a fraction to the N/NW. It travelled from an estimated 30 degrees above horizon at onset moving at approx a 120-130 degree angle to the horizon. It didn't appear to be a smoke trail, but rather a phosphorescent like glow / ion tail type trail that persisted about a second behind the advancing fireball and quickly fading to invisible after that as it went below horizon. The fireball, main and the several pieces that went from brilliant white at the moment of the brightest flash about a second after the fireball initially appeared, went from brilliant florescent BRIGHT white then bluish white with oranges mixing in. At the flash which wasn't one instant event but an intense initial flash followed by several flashes of lesser intensity giving the overall appearance of a flickering light that immediately produced several independent pieces that produced their own momentary trail and steadily reduced in magnitude of brightness from the breakup until I lost sight below horizon. Brilliant white overall that lost luminosity and passed through bluish white, oranges and reds in tail but with the coma remaining white the duration; possibly lessening whitish blue at the end. After each flash, the brightness shot up the scale again and then began to lessen intensity and go through the spectrum. The flash / breakup occured around the 2.5-3 second mark followed by flickering through approx 4-4.75 seconds. Approx 6 second overall best estimation. The fireball lit up a good portion of the sky around it that increased to lighting up at least (in my estimation) half of the sky at the flash / breakup. As it moved below the top of the treeline, the forest was well illuminated and I could see perfect detail of individual trees / branches as it continued diving to the horizon. The night was utterly silent and immediately after the fireball, I heard dogs begin to bark all around the countryside and, eerily, nearby cattle began to moo in what I've come to know by living in the country seemed to be an alert vocalization. Not long moo's, but short repeating high pitched (for a cow) sounds. Sorry for the cheesy description; I want you to understand that this thing was big and bright enough to upset the cows. Absolutely amazing, once in a lifetime. I hope my description makes sense.. I've seen many spectacular meteors but nothing that approached this. It was reminiscent of some of the famous fireballs you see on tv documentaries that are caught on security cams, etc. Amazing. The train wasn't smoke I don't think, more like an ion tail on a comet; phosphorescent. Show more |

Most impressive comet like object I have ever seen... in the sky. It was huge and I expected to hear a crashing sound and see flames on its impact. Not sure why I woke up at that time and looked out the window, but I'm glad I did. I expected to hear a report on the news or find out it was a plane going to CVG airport in flames. I did a search online and found this website. Hope someone else saw it. Most impressive comet like object I have ever seen in the sky. My attention was attracted by bright light in sky ... from inside home seen through window. Green light coming from upper left to lower right in form of a ball; grew larger in size as it moved toward horizon; true movement obscured by tree tops before disappearing. Second one a few seconds later but not as large as first. At its nearest point size appeared about the same as a full moon but much closer. Window and trees obscured any possible trail. Show more |

I was completely sober and have 20/20 vision! Ther... e was no moon. It was just big enough and impressive enough, I googled around today trying to see if anyone else had reported it. Please note, this happened at about 9:15 pm EST on 2-12-12, so I am figuring that is 0315 hours GMT. I doubt this would classify as a "fireball" but it was not an ordinary meteor sighting. I'm not a professional skywatcher. I have gone ou... t and watched a couple of metero showeres in the past. I'm 64 years old and this was different from anything I've ever seen in the sky because it was larger and appeared closer and the trails were wider, both the white one and the final brief ( and beautiful) green one. I was in a rural area, no other lights, no other cars, so I had a good view, angle of descent was my biggest problem, it was descending at very roughly I'd say 45 degrees, I am a pretty good observer, but not so good with angles, although was math major 43 years ago. glowing white object moving left to right as I faced southwest, LARGER than normal "shooting star" by a factor of about three.and slower by about 50% first WHITE trail, then as objected descended trail turned GREEN for about half a second and then object disappeared from view. total viewing time maybe 1.5 seconds. Driving east on Hwy. 72, it appeared slightly nort... h of the road, and midway down toward the horizon. It was very brilliant, had a short sparkler tail, and seemed very large and close. I would have expected it to impact nearby -- it seemed that close. The train was a short spray of "sparks" that was extinguished before the final appearance of the "falling star". The sparks appeared similar to the sparks coming off a sparkler type of fireworks. Show more |

My wife and I were walking the dogs to stay warm w... hile our eyes dark adapted for a night of viewing. We were looking at the skies in anticipation of our observation session. But near the end of the walk, we were treated to our best sight of the evening, before I had even set up my telescope! The streaking yellowish point of light rapidly expanded into a large orange-red ball with visible flame. The flame appeared slightly conical, with a smaller leading edge flaring to a larger trailing edge. At its largest, its apparent diameter was perhaps 1/3 to 1/2 that of the full moon. Show more |

I apologise for any vague comments or errors I hav... e made in my estimations. I am not even a regular stargazer. I just happened to be looking out of my bedroom window as I had spotted Orion, my favourite constellation. When I went back to have another look at Orion I noticed this bright light in the sky travelling east to west. I had no idea what it was as I had never seen anything like it before and I have no idea how to express what I saw in the correct terminology. I was standing at my first floor dorma window when I saw it so the estimation of the angle above the horizon was difficult to judge. When I first saw it it looked like a plane, but it was definitely different. It then seemed to have a 'fragmentation' coming down from it as it was directly infront of me and then 2 more came down just before it disappeared from view. This was so weird to see! I had no idea what was h... appening! These 3 bright orange fiery glowing balls were curving back and forth, left to right, etc. and they had a trail behind them and then eventually disappeared. I can recall this very accurately. The object appe... ared approximately 5 degrees above Sirius and equal distance away from it (5 degrees) to the west. It appeared to move as a bottlerocket firework, only instead of going up, it shot down. It ended roughly within 1 second, and it STRICTLY shot down, moving not 1 degree towards the west or the east. It disappeared roughly around the same amount of degrees below Sirius as it did when it started, apporoximately 5, for a total traveling distance of 10 degrees, give or take. It very much resembled the star Betelgeuse, only much bigger and much brighter. It left no trail, nor did it become brighter or dimmer at any point within its travel. There was no noise associated with the event either. Show more |

i saw two of those actually. the information i hav... e given is for the second one as i cud observe it for a longer time and distinctly remember some details(i even checked its direction with my phone's compass). the first one that caught my attention soon faded. note that it faded, not cross the sky and go out of view. the first one was travelling in a more horizontal direction. also, the speeds of these fireballs seemed relatively slow as compared to some small meteors that i had observed in meteor showers before. for the second one, the trail too seemed to linger for quite some time. also, the size of the fireball dint seem too large(it was only slightly brighter and wider than the trail). initially it was like a thin, slightly curved line of light with no smoke. later it seemed a little wider and i think i could make out smoke at the end of the trail Show more |

Interesting that I did not see anything, but the p... hone picked it up. I did not see anything with the naked eye as I took pictures of the moon. When I reviewed the pictures on my android, I could see the red ball and blew it up to see what it was. The times varied between pictures, but the two good pictures were taken seconds apart and demonstrates fast movement. It never fell to the earth. I can provide pictures. Show more |

The object/ball had a orange/yellowish tail at the... tail of as it fell when I first
observed it. Then that color disappeared
and a white/maybe a little bluish color took it's place. It looked closer to the ground
than any meteor that I ever saw during a meteor shower - it was either big or closer
to the ground. It did seemed to appear like the fireworks as they fall to the ground
as I read in some other descriptions people have made. I would love to know if others
have seen this object and what you suspect it to be, please contact me if you find
out. Thanks. Show more |

I would love some feedback if possible! Thanks... ... very interesting. As it faded it split into two distinct pieces before disappearing into atmosphere. Hard to explain, first time reporting a meteor.... I have seen many over the years, but this one was peculiar in nature. Long train, tip to tail stayed visible for a shocking amount of time. I can't recall any colors other than bright white, perhaps it had other colors, it was bright enough to catch my attention while walking my dog and stayed long enough for me to yell and catch others attention whom had enough time to see it as well. I went out to look at the moon that was rising ove... r the horizon to see if there was a halo effect to the moon tonight. I know the moon was going to be bright and had read somewhere it may produce a halo tonight. I have seen it before and thought it was amazing and wanted to make sure I got photos later tonight if it looked like it was going to. After looking for a little bit at the moon (I think it will have a halo tonight) I began to look around at the the sky as it is a crystal clear night out. That's when I saw it. It was very cool. It wasn't very fast like a "shooting star" but was actually slower and took a few seconds to make the trek I viewed it on, it appeared to fragment slightly and then disappeared. Upon first seeing the fireball/shooting star I thought it may be a plane as it was headed toward Newark Airport. Then pieces appeared to trail off and float/follow behind! I felt I need to say something for I am a school b... us driver & I only told one other fellow driver about this because people tend to frown, well low & behold 2 other fellow drivers seen this & it was all our times were accurate & also it was in the same direction, so I believe we all witnessed the same one. This was truly an amazing experiance for us all, & made me feel so much better for I was not the only one who seen it... thankyou so much... I just hope there were more who seen this :) If by fragmentation you mean pieces shooting off it yes I did, you could see that pieces were visibly coming off. At first when I spotted it I thought it was a shooting star due to it was a white shinning little mass, then in an instant the color was changing to a blue, greenish, then all of a sudden a flame came off the back & you could actually see pieces of it flying off... my heart stopped I thought it was a plane going down, then realized it may have been a meteor. I was walking my dog. I turned around and saw what... looked to be a single-engine plane on fire and arcing/plummeting at a great rate of speed toward the ground. It was in the northwest sky when I saw it and it arched across the sky to the northeast. I kept waiting to hear a "boom" - but none came. As it arched and I didn't hear any noise - (I had my headphones on and was listening to a radio program) - so it could have been making a sound. I realized it wasn't a plane crashing - it was a meteor. My friend's husband is an astronomer - so I Facebook messaged her to ask what I had seen - and she told me what I had seen was a fireball. I wanted to show my husband what I had seen - and I discovered this website to report it - so I did. The train was very long. It was yellow and glowing. It was very similiar to the meteors I've seen during meteor showers - but MUCH, MUCH larger with a long, streaming tail. Show more |

I was absolutely stunned to see this object sailin... g over my road from west to east as I was walking my dog in the early morning. It was not far above the ground ( I thought about one hundred feet above the road) and if there was anything left of it before it hit the earth, I am guessing that there may be remnants of it somewhere between Amann Road and West Bloomfield Road. It seemed to be dropping fast--losing altitude quickly. glowing but it didn't last very long Show more |

I have seen many meteor showers in the past, and t... his was quite unusual. It was quite a large light in the sky that I thought was a very bright star and it almost seemed stationary. Then very it started falling directly straight down and seemed to grow in size the closer it got to the ground. Just before at the horizon it glowed very bright and instantly lost sight of it. My wife and I were driving from Seattle, WA to Vancouver, BC. I saw it then told my wife and we both had a real good view. This was undoubtedly the largest meteor we have seen. It did seem to grow larger toward the ground, then go out of our site quite quickly. I have seen many meteor showers in the past, and this was quite unusual. We were driving south on Hwy 360, south of Riversi... de, but before I-30, I saw a green light in the sky to the East...and I didn't know what it was at first then it kind of disappeared. There was another meteor sighting just a few days ago and it looked like the same thing I saw on the News. I don't know what all this means I didn't see that closely....maybe some other people will report it too. Show more |

The object was as bright as several Venuses put to... gether. The light was more solid and intense than an airplane, and the disappearance was sudden. No fragmentation. If there was a flash, it was very slight. The object seemed more to just vanish. I saw a whitish smokey train when I got out of my car about 3 minutes after seeing the streaking light. The train appeared to be in the same region of the sky as the streak. Show more |

I saw this from my bedroom window, which was open.... From the window I can see and hear the planes coming into land at the airport which is nearby. The object seemed to be almost following the same trajectory as the landing planes, however, it was moving at a much faster speed. The object was much brighter than the moon last night (which I could also see at the time) and almost as large in perspective. The core was bright white with an outer orange-yellow glow; the tail was an almost electric blue colour, which was probably 3 finger widths (at outstretched arm) long. I didn't see a train after it disappeared. I heard no noise, immediate or latent, or if there was latent noise it wasn't discernible from low level urban traffic and industry noises. I've watched a few meteor showers in my time, and I've seen enough shooting stars, this was unlike any thing else I've ever seen; it was so much larger than your average shooting star meteor and so colourful. The time I reported is an approximation based on when I tweeted about it, I'm not sure of exact time, but anywhere between 12:30am - 1:45am AWST. Show more |

I looked up and thought I saw the moon(roughly the same size at the time) but it was bright orange, Traveling a little faster than an airplane. The fireball never lost fire in the length of time... we observed it. It disappeared behind the treeline, as we observed from the higway. We were driving eastbound on the highway, and there was no safe way to 'chase' the sighting. We heard a loud hissing sound, but thought it must have been something with the radio, never really thinking about the fireball being the cause of the sound. As we played basketball outside that night with tw... o other friends as all of our eyes caught a light in the air. We then turned our heads up and to the slight right and watched as the abject traveled across the yard and then burned up into the air. This was a very larger then normal shooting star. it was about as big as half of a full moon from our persprective and lasted about 5 seconds until it burned up. It came over the tree line and not as fast as a normal shooting star but it was a little slower. the trail behind it was about 5 or 6 of the fireballs lenght. The object came over top of us about 300-400 yards above us and then burned out directly above us. The trail seemed to spark up into the dark as it disappeared. Show more |

On my 9th floor balcony, looking out over the city... at the Empire State Building. I saw a fireball that got brighter as it descended - had a blue trail. As it descended, it got brighter and there were flashes of red and orange. It was very large. Large enough that I thought it was a helicopter on fire. The fireball appeared to go down near the ESB. Because of it's size, I am surprised to learn that it landed very far away (Maryland). I saw a descending fireball that had a blue trail. The object was very bright -- like a burning tree ... branch falling across the sky. I was sitting by the window and saw the flash out of the corner of my eye. It was a ball with a tail, and it seemed rather thick in body. I lost sight of it when it disappeared behind the tree line. Show more |

I almost brushed it off as a possible firework bas... ed on color (greenish) and size, was very bright. Both myself and my 17 year old saw it. Upon arriving home some 5 minutes later and 2-3 miles away, my 10 year old says she saw a very similar sight and described its direction and color. In my opinion we were too far apart with a large hill seperating us for it to have been a firework and we both saw the same thing. Possible there was a flash, very quick but a hill and tree line may have obscurred possible continuation of object You could only see it for a couple seconds, glowing orange, possibly some smoke Show more |

I'm been in aviation for 25+ years (AF navigator)... and am familiar with typical meteor showers. I've also witness a fireball a long time ago driving around the midwest at night. The first meteor reminded me of that one I saw in the midwest and the 2nd one was like a very spectacular green firework. First one ended in a very bright/blinding flash. The 2nd one seemed to burn itself out vs. explode like the first.
Ironically, I had heard a very loud explosion sound about 10 mintues prior to seeing these two meteors. I thought it was someone shooting a gun but my young daughter came in my room as she was scared from the sound. I didn't consider a correlation until after seeing the two fireballs. My wife and I were traveling when we saw this amaz... ing light go across the sky in a downard left motion, at first we thought perhaps it was a shooting star until it got bigger and then turned colors. It really seemed to be very close, and we were expecting to see a fire on the ground. I am glad that we were not alone in viewing this last night. seems like toward the end there was a greenish flash and then it dissapeared. Show more |

The fireball appeared very low. I had the impressi... on that it was falling down very close. In the car I even crouched my posture down, and was stunned to see something falling. It was definitely not a typical shooting star that I have seen many times that appear distant. This was much bigger brighter and felt very close, very low. It seemed when it fizzled out, that it "landed" ahead of me in the next town. At first I thought it was a plane coming down way too low or part of a plane was falling out of the sky since there are many planes in the area and are usually visible in the night sky. It looked as though it landed down ahead of me in the next town. It was moving from North to South in my window as I was driving. The fireball appeared very low. Very exciting. At first thought it was a shooting... star but realized way to big and traveling toward earth as opposed to across the horizon. The fireball looked exactly like fireworks working in reverse. traveling toward earth leading with a bright yellow fireball with a continuous white tail. the fireball just 'vaporized' above the tree line on the horizon. the entire time of visibility was approx 10 seconds. no smoke/trails/trains remained after it disappeared. it appeared to just vaporize. Didn't know who to report it to. it was amazing -... fast and streaking across the sky in a NW direction (to my left as I drove in fairfax va), very close compared to shooting stars, and incredibly bright and clear - nothing fuzzy about it. i feel lucky to have seen it. the flash was bright yellow and maybe some white, looked like a firework flash (somewhat) but was obviously not a firework. no sound, but i was in the car. a streak of yellow light above the horizen. as soon as it streaked by the meteor sparked ( like a firework) and was gone. It was amazing and seemed so close that I wanted t... o try and find the impact site but did not because I was approaching interstate rte 66... I am also reporting for my daughter and her boyfriend who saw the same meteor from College Park ( University of Maryland campus), MD which was aprox. 25 miles to the northeast of my location The meteor looked so close ( 2-5 miles to my east by northeast) that I opened my car's window thinking I might be able to hear the impact. Due to the obscured view and short glimpses I got ... of it there is a possibility that this was not a meteor. It was moving quite fast. I apologize in advance if I am mistaken. Barbed shape, I caught it looking a window and it was frequently obscured by trees during the descent There is a slim change that it was a flare fired on the river, but I do not think so. I wish I got a better look at it. Due to the obscured view and short glimpses I got of it there is a possibility that this was not a meteor. It was moving quite fast. This is a really nice form. I was driving, my wife... saw it first. The car windows were up so there was no sound. If I had to estimate a landing I would think Delaware. 2 fragments fell off to the right and went dark quickly. Glowing train pieces fell off on the high side of the trail as it descended left to right. It was as bright as a -8 Iridium flare. Show more |

Absolutely breathtaking sight to behold! I've ne... ver experienced anything like it. The size, length, brightness and colors were amazing! And to hear the boom, after we saw that, was awesome!! Approximately 3 seconds after viewing the fireball streak across the sky, there was a large flash, then it continued to streak for another second or two before disappearing behind the houses/treeline Absolutely breathtaking sight to behold! I've never experienced anything like it. The size, length, brightness and colors were amazing! And to hear the boom, after we saw that, was awesome!! a bit of a glowing train, not exceptionally long or bright, as most of it was contained in the tail end of the fireball Show more |

The trajectory seemed to be that of an object that... entered and exited the atmosphere and not of something that fell to earth because it did not appear to be falling down but rather passing by. The way it disappeared into the sky looked like something out of a movie as it appeared to be swallowed into a hole and the bright glow quickly faded from the size of a dime to a bright speck to nothing in less than a second. For a split second after it was gone there was a slight halo effect at the spot where it vanished. I have seen shooting stars and meteor showers but nothing of this size and nothing this close. The object appeared to be spinning from right to left or clockwise from my perspective and as it spun the color would change from green to white and the trailing sparks would vary from larger chunks to fine sparks. object decended rapidly from above to ground in st... raight path. was very bright white with green flames. it did not look like typical shooting star-nuch brighter and different pattern of travel. it was close to ground and then my view was obstructed by trees and buildings. it appeared to fall right out of the sky. was in direction of Newark Airport and thought perhaps a piece of a plane fell off..but there was no fire...more of an eerie green flames. did not hear any noise. bright white ball with green flames along the top Show more |

Absolutely amazing!!! I have never seen anything ... like it. It was slower than the "typical" shooting star but not too slow. Just slow enough to really see it before it disappeared. It was so much closer than any shooting stars I've ever seen before. Also, the google maps wouldn't let me input directions and such so for all of the answers I had to select the "I don't know" button. The flash was a very bright glow (a big glowing ring of white in the center and orange surrounding it), a very briight flash then pitch black. It was beautiful! Very bright and glowing, there was orange coming from behind the head but were not present down the tail. Show more |

Hi Claire, Thanks for coming back to me so promptl... y. Definitely not a Chinese lantern. My brother and nephew are avid sky watchers, they have telescopes which they observe with on a regular basis. I immediately phoned them and that was their first response as well. When I told them the direction, size and speed that this was travelling, they were also unsure and said it could not be Chinese lanterns. This is so exciting but equally frustrating. People just tend to look at you strangely when you describe it. But at least two of us witnessed this together. If you do find out anything, please let me know. With best regards Katie From: Johannesburg Planetarium [mailto:planet@planetarium.co.za] Sent: 03 February 2012 11:35 AM To: Katie Geyser Subject: Re: Info Hi Katie There's been quite a few reports of Chinese lanterns in the last couple of years - could it have been one of these? They're a very distinct orange colour Regards Claire Flanagan Jhb Planetarium Katie Geyser wrote: Good day, I don’t know if anyone else has contacted regarding a big orange ball that passed through our skies last night as between 9:10 and 9:15pm. We observed this in the suburb of Primrose in Germiston. We saw a huge orange ball moving from east to west, at first we thought it was a flare, but they usually hover, that’s when we realised it was something else. When it went over the roof, we ran outside the back of our house to watch it go over. It was huge, with no tail and moving slowly compared to other meteor showers, which normally fall vertically, this was travelling horizontally, I don’t know how to describe the speed, but lets say from watching it directly above my bedroom door to the horizon in the west took about 30 seconds before it dipped beyond the horizon. There was no tail and no sound. It was close to earth, not like when you see the space shuttle or a satellite, that look like stars. This was about five times as big as the evening star, absolutely amazing. If it was a meteor, then it was unbelievably close to earth. Best regards, Katie Geyser no flash no train Show more |

The initial fireball broke into a narrowly confine... d stream of sparks, similar in appearence to the sparks coming off a metal grindind wheel. The initial trail was brilliant orange/yellow, and bright enough to drown out the ambient starlight. Almost immediately afterwards, there wals a bluish-white wave that followed it, like the wake behind a high-speed boat. This wake looked roughly the width of a pencil held at arms length and dissipated rapidly. Show more |

I've never seen a bollide this large or bright so ... I'm wondering if that's indeed what I saw. I consider myself an experienced amateur astronomer (I have a 22-inch telescope in a dome in New Mexico) and have observed many meteor showers and several bollides in dark skies, but I've never seen anything like this before especially in an urban area. The bollide streaked west to east with a solid green train that seemed to explode and then fizzle into several specks I've never seen a bollide this large or bright so I'm wondering if that's indeed what I saw. looked like it was breaking up with large sparks f... lying off as it came into atmosphere. it was quite long and white when we first saw it with the fireball super bright green. as it came into the atmosphere we could see it breaking up with stuff that looked like sparkles shooting off the back and they were yellow/gold like fire. I assumed the balls of white and possibly sparks w... ere fragments burning up. As we watched it went across our range of vision with the ball looking like the pointed end of a cone and the cone was 6-8 degrees across the length and about four degrees wide at the trailing end. There were balls of white (smoke?) shooting off of the back as it disappeared below the tree line to the east. Show more |

This is the report I wrote the next day: I was in ... my backyard with my dog last night (Feb 1). It was a couple hours after dark but I didn't take note of the time. My house in Fort Worth (I30 and 35W which is almost in Arlington) faces west and is very cubical. So the entire western sky is blocked off from my back porch. (It's actually kind of nice because it blocks off the a lot of the light pollution.) The house is two story and provides a very effective visual shield of the western sky. The backyard faces due east. I sitting was on my back porch, which is not covered. The first thing I noticed was the yard light up. It was somewhat feignt, but it was very obvious. It caught my attention immediately because it was unusual for the yard to light up like that. The shadows were moving indicating that the light source was moving. My first thought was that maybe it was car lights reflecting off a wall, but I'm not sure what wall that would have been. Then it came over the top of the house and over my head. I would say it was very roughly 30 degrees to the south away from directly over head. But all of my "measurements" here are just estimates based on what I can remember. It was moving almost from due west to due east. It was a burning object way up there. The only conclusion I can come to is that it was a meteor. I've sat out a couple times and watched the occasionial meteorite during a shower or just a long night out in the middle of no where. This wasn't even comparable to that. I believe the object was "easily" 100 times brighter than any meteor I've ever personally seen, but I'm a VERY inexperienced amatur astronomer. I think I can say it was brighter than the moon. Well, thinking about it, it was DEFINATELY brighter than the moon (which was in half phase last night) because it lit up the yard that was already lit up by the moon. So, that proves it was quite a bit brighter than the moon. And it looked more like a burning jet liner, in brightness, than Jupiter. Jupiter was probably 50 times darker, if I was just going to try to make a wild guess. (I've spent quite a few nights looking at Jupiter.) I mention Jupiter because I'm very familiar with it and I've never seen a meteor nearly as bright as Jupiter. This was like 50 times brighter than Jupiter. I didn't take measurements, but I think the tail was very roughly 30 degrees (3 fists)in length across the sky. I think the tail was roughly 4 times less bright than the object, which still made the tail amazingly bright. I think the object was roughly the color of the sun, but I remember the tail having a slight orange hue to it. The tail made me think of a light saber from Star Wars. It was almost like a "flare" going across the sky. My first thought was "That's NOT good. If that thing hits the earth we're in some serious trouble." I actually stood up and walked half way across the yard visually "following it" to see if it landed. I'm sure it took 4 or 5 seconds or so to walk that distance. I'd never seen anything remotely like it burning through the sky. I watched it "burn out" about 20 degrees above the horizon. It just went dim. I didn't hear any sonic boom or anything, but I'm in the city and wasn't specifically listening for it. I wondered what I had just seen. I thought it might have been space junk. Or possibly a meteor. Or possibly a man made object comming back to earth the hard way before it was supposed to. I estimated that it was about the size of the space shuttle and about the altitude of high airline flights, like 40,000 feet. But that was just a wild guess. I'm a terrible judge of size and distance for astronomical objects. I think the moon is closer and smaller than it really is. It cast very noticable moving shadows as it came over the top of the house. The yard was moonlit from the half moon and backyard lights in the neighborhood. It traveled almost straight from west to east and I must have watched it for at least 5 seoncds before it burnt out. Even though it seemed to have been moving straight west to east, it's path was about 30 degrees south of directly overhead throughout it's flight so that by the time I lost sight of it it was probably 20 degreessouth of due east, roughly. I mostly just remember seeing the train disappear and watching the main object dim like a dying ember until it disappeared. I remember that at the time it reminded me of a light saber from the Star Wars movie. I didn't notice much change in the whole thing until it was about 20 degrees above the eastern horizon. Towards the end, I saw it dim. The tail/train disappeared and for less than a second I continued to see the main object fade in brightness and disappear. That was probably very roughly 5 seconds after it appeared right over my head coming over the house. Show more |

This object appeared directly to the west and went... straight overhead, when I first spotted it I thought it was a airplane on fire trying for a landing at DFW. This is how low it appeared to be. I have seen alot of other meteorites falling from the sky, that most seem to be at a lot further distance and that could just be the size difference. I have seen the Space Shuttle enter the atmosphere above Texas as a glowing orange ball of fire with a very long orange train and vapor trail, but this is the first lowest and longest lasting meteorite I have ever seen that put on such a show. There was red-orange fragments as long as the object was in view. I was beside a building and as it was overhead heading to the east I ran to the west to keep it in sight as long as possible before the buildings roof edge blocked my view. The last thing I saw, it was still a fireball and the trail was still very long and active This object appeared directly to the west and went straight overhead, when I first spotted it I thought it was a airplane on fire trying for a landing at DFW. This was one of the longest sightings I had seen -... the best way to describe the size of the ball is to say it would look to be a little bigger than the "size" of the landing lights on a plane if you were at the airport watching planes landing. The sparkles did not appear to resemble falling debri, just disintegration. The train appeared about the time that the glowing green ball started getting smaller. The tail had what resembled firework sparklers above and below the tail. The tail sparkles seemed to appear when the ball burnt out. The sparkles lasted only 1 to 2 seconds (the ball lasted about 5 seconds before it looked like it burnt up) Show more |

looked like a large shell firework when it flashed... and fragmented. I am an aviator and have seen plenty of strange objects in the sky and multiple meteor showers and this by far is the most impressive thing I have seen in terms of size, brightness and length that it lasted. Object was steady white as it crossed the sky, then flashed followed immediately by red/orange fire tail and fragmentation. Show more |

I never saw a meteor that large. It appeared to be... a skyrocket at first, but was too large and moving too slow for that. It had a tail so I thought then that it was a comet, but it suddenly blew up or disappeared. I'm sure I saw bright fragments at the last. Pretty much covered in initial description..little... fragmentation Not trained, did not have unobstructed view, was on balcony facing downtown Dallas. Entire view across horizon lasted @ 3-4 seconds, coming [roughly] NNW, headed SSW. Was not parallel to horizon, slightly descending angle, which did not match selections on this site. It was BIG, BRIGHT and moving FAST...no sound. Definitely not upper atmosphere. For comparison see: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2009/10/091015-fireball-explodes-netherlands-germany-picture.html What I saw, main object much closer and/or larger, brilliant blue with some green tinges, surrounded by glow... almost perfect circle. Tail mostly bright yellow, some red, but no indication of debris/breaking up..and the tail was *maybe* a third of size of one in photo., and tail much more defined..think elongated triangle. Not positive if coincidence, or related to object, but heard muffled boom 60 -90 seconds after object left view Show more |

It seemed to appear out of nowhere and light up th... e sky. It last a very long time . Was so bright. It was amazing to see. It was unbelieveable how close it was to us. After it was gone a very slight almost burnt smell was noticed. Seemed to go out with a burst of light. And had Whole glowing trail started as blue and violet, then changed to red then orange as it progressed. Appeared as if was sparking at the end. Show more |

My friend saw it first and probably saw it at abou... t 60 degrees then I saw it when it was closer to overhead. It seemed low to the ground and went right over the building we were standing next to. Four of us saw it. The ball was very defined, then there was a tail on it. It seemed to move slow overhead. It was amazing!!! There was a long train after the ball, but I didn't notice a tail after I could no longer see the fireball. Show more |

I was at a stop light at the intersection of Band... era Road and Cedar Trail facing South. As I looked toward Cedar Trail (east) I noticed a very bright light that was large. It seemed at first to move slowly and as soon as I saw it I said something out loud. My 8 and 11 year old boys were with me and looked and were amazed as well.
As we watched it the color changed from white to blue and seemed to pick up speed. Then the train appeared and the ball seemed to get brighter and smaller. The train was very long and then seemed to break apart as the color changed on the fireball.
It was one of the most amazing things I have ever seen. I wish I had my camera with me because this thing was very bright. Please note that at the intersection there is plenty of light. I noticed the fireball even with the bright lights at the intersection. Wow. Helotes, TX is just outside San Antonio. fragmentation was on the train. The ball was big, like the size of a full moon. I... t was falling in a straight line but looked like a flair looks when it falls from the sky. Strangest thing I have ever seen at night. The bright ball went to 1/2 it's size and started showing the tail. I guess thats a fragment. First we saw a large white ball in the sky falling. In the last few seconds before it disappeared, the ball diminished to about 1/2 it's size and then had a cone shaped tail behind it, orange in color. The ball turned greenish blue towards the end. I had just gone out to the backyard and was lookin... g up to the sky in a north northwesterly direction. I noticed a plane heading that was heading due east. I am 30 miles northeast of DFW airport and can only estimate, but I would think it was about 10-20 miles away at an altitude of 3000-5000 feet. After the plane I turned to the north northeast when a bright light shined above my right shoulder. It was like a huge floodlight in near distance. I turned to it, now facing east southeast, and saw this beautiful array of colors. A blue, orange, green head with a long white trail. The trail was approximately 40 degrees long with a height of approximately 10 degrees. It appeared to be only hundreds of feet above the ground, much lower than the airplane. From the time I turned to see the light, and the end of the event, was about 5 seconds. It lasted long enough that I thought: “I should make a wish”,” my wife isn’t going to see this”, and even, ”where is my camera?” Its northeastern descent was not steep; from my vantage point it appeared to be less than 30 degrees. As the flame extinguished it seemed I could see the object and expected that it may land only miles away. After reading so many other accounts of this same event and from hundreds of miles away, my estimation of this being a thousand feet above could be completely wrong. Nonetheless it was fantastic, and probably a “once in my lifetime event”. I've seen few shooting stars/meteors and all were brief, and tiny in comparison. As it turned out, my wife was indeed seeing the meteor. She was several miles away and happened to see the entire event but she estimates it lasted 8-10 seconds. Wow, what an experience! Show more |

Turning, I saw the meteor streak across the sky moving West to East and watched it continue East until it burned out. I watched it at it crossed west to east from my patio until it faded out west of my home.
