First time I've seen something like this although I've seen meteor showers before but they appeared much higher up. An airliner on an approach path from the northeast going to ONT or LAX crossed the path of the object (at a higher altitude) about 15 or 20 seconds later. The pilots may have seen it as well.

It became slightly brighter then winked out. At the moment that happened something appeared to drop from it - yellow orangish in color - it winked out quickly as well.
