I saw additional evidence corroborating this sighting on Facebook and Twitter. From Franklin - "Wasn't quick enough to get a picture or video but out fishing and just saw my first meteorite falling from the sky a few minutes ago. So cool. Fire ball streaming down from the sky, pop of bright light then burnt out. Wonder where it ended up?!" From Carrboro NC "Wow! Meteorite over Carrboro!". From Raleigh NC "Did anybody else just see that huge meteorite in southeast Raleigh?". A sighting in Salvo. And from Greenville NC "Did anyone else in the Greenville area just see that meteorite? Those bright white flashes illuminated everything! Too cool!" To me the head looked stoplight green and sparkly, which had me thinking at first it might be a firework, but there was never a burst. It secreted a white tail behind it, and from my angle seemed to fall toward the earth, lasting what seemed a long time (maybe 5 seconds) and seeming enough that I honestly expected to see some kind of explosion when it landed. I was driving on Northbound I-85 somewhere around the Graham Street exit, but I couldn't remember exactly where - I figure I must have emerged from under the bridge to see the sky ahead of me, and I-85 seems to face fairly East or ENE around there. |
