Remarks I'm a student pilot. My flight instructor and I were flying at an altitude of around 10,000 feet MSL when both him and I observed a lit green bright object off to our 10-11 o'clock position. We were traveling at a (magnetic) heading between 240º and 260º. The light from the object lasted approximately 3 seconds. The object fell relatively close to us (easily within 3 nautical miles) and then disappeared. We first observed the object as it was falling slightly above us (relative to our altitude) and then the light extinguished and disappeared when it was slightly below us. The light was a bright green in color and quickly faded to green and then yellow. At first, we wondered if it was a flare or military activity below, and then upon reviewing the area's visual flight rules sectional chart, we determined that we were not within a military operations area, as well as determined that the light extinguished too quickly to have been a flare.
