I've seen plenty of "shooting stars" and approximately 3 " fire balls" over the last 20 plus years. I've worked 2nd shift for all that time. I like to look for satellites that drift out of the Suns light on summer evenings. I may not know the names of the things I'm looking at but I enjoy looking none the less. But i can say I've never come across what I saw last night. Hopefully this will help you.

Remarks
I was looking at the moon and I believe that I was looking at Venus off to the left of the moon approximately 3" in my scale. And approximately an 1.5" below "Venus" I saw a bright orangish/red flash/explosion a little larger than Venus. No tail was observed. It positively was not a plane/ jet/helicopter. And I have outstanding vision. I hope this is helpful to you. I would just like to know what I saw.
