I was taking out the garbage when in the sky, to my south-west, between my house and my southern neighbor's house, I spotted (from the corner of my eye at first) a long tongue of white flame, tipped with a brilliant white point. The length of the flame I estimate as being the length of my thumb (entire finger) held at arm's length. The flame's height above the horizon I did not measure, but it was just below the eaves of my neighbor's house. The shooting star passed behind the house as I ran across the street, about 20 feet) for a better view without trees interfering. I was able to reacquire the shooting star at that time, but the flame was just dissapating into nothingness and the bright, white tip faded swiftly into yellow, then deep red, then faded entirely.
There was no sound.
Explanation: Since there was no sound, I will conjecture that the 'object' was passing through the very edge of our atmosphere and was, therefore, a piece of space junk entering (or transiting) the atmosphere or a meteor, although I am unaware of any predicted meteor appearances. |
