Remarks |
I was driving north on I-77 from Charlotte, NC, just north of Exit 16 where Sunset Road crosses. The road runs nearly due north at that point. The appearance was very brief. It seemed to appear all at once in the upper left quadrant of my main field of vision, but well within my main field of vision, rather than to enter from my peripheral vision. It was startlingly large and bright, teardrop shaped with a nearly white rounded front trailing back to yellow and orange with what appeared to be a thin gray trail that was only visible close to the main body. It appeared to be moving from southwest to northeast at about a 45 degree angle to my direction of travel and headed fairly steeply down, also roughly at a 45 degree angle to the horizon. It disappeared in the same way it appeared, all at once. It was simply gone, and the trail was no longer visible. It seemed so close and to be coming down at such a steep angle that I expected to see an impact near I-77 as I continued north to my exit, Exit 25 at Sam Furr Road in Huntersville. But I arrived home without seeing any evidence that any part of it fell in the area, and there was no news of any sightings or any impact. None of the people at my house had heard any sounds to indicate the explosion and crash of an aircraft or the passing and impact of a supersonic meteor. Today, I have neither seen nor heard any local reports of sightings. My wife found your website through Google by entering "meteor charlotte nc." |
