Reports Report 388f (Event 388-2014)

Observer
Name Jenny B
Experience Level 2/5
Remarks The 'some astronomy experience' is very limited to telescope viewings I can count on one hand and naked-eye meteorite shower viewing. Apparently (I learned after reading on your site) it couldn't have been as close as it appeared since it was still aflame, yet it looked like it went right over top the road. Nothing was visible (such as a rock) once the light dissipated. I scanned the fields from the road, looking for steam or a trail in the snow made from the rock but no such luck. I chose three colors from your site that represented the color of light I recalled seeing. I had noted a blue light at the end of the tail, not green, but the blue option on the website seemed further off color-wise from what I remember seeing than the green shade did. I also thought I saw more of a pinkish light rather than orange. I don’t know how accurate that is; it only lasted a second or less. After reading how rare it is to see a meteorite fall, I began to have doubt about what I saw. My science-minded teenage son encouraged me to report this so if this turns out to be of any help, he is the one to thank!

Remarks It somewhat resembled a bottle rocket ( but a bit thicker and no sound). It left a short dark smoke trail that disappeared rather quickly (kind of curled before disappearing). The object/smoke appeared very close. I thought maybe it landed in a field just ahead of me (west side of road) but the smoke disappeared too quickly before I could run down the road past the trees to the next clearing.
