Reports Report 2257al (Event 2257-2026)

Observer
Name Jamie V
Experience Level 3/5
Remarks I may have the direction incorrect. I was driving in a new city at the time and my recollection of the exact location of the sighting may be inaccurate. I saw it through the front windshield of my vehicle. It was the brightest meteor I've ever seen. It was low to the horizon and left a slight trail that nearly instantaneously extinguished. The meteor itself simply faded out as it approached the horizon. It did not reach the horizon, having faded out above the tree line. Just for legitimacy, I am a PhD-trained biologist, who is skeptical of supernatural beliefs. I occasionally star gaze with my children. I have shown them "shooting stars" and I have explained the difference between planets, stars, constellations, and other astronomical phenomena. I am also aware of the recent uptick in meteor reports. I'm relatively confident (80%) this is an authentic meteor sighting, leaving room for reflections on my windshield and other light factors, and I'm curious if it is related to other reports across the nation. I'm also curious whether there were other reports in the Winston Salem, NC area at the same time.
