Remarks |
We live down in a valley/hole on the south shore of lower Pine Lake in Hardin County. This meteor was observed by my 18 year old daughter and her friend from our north facing livingroom window. I was not at home, but am filling this out based on their reports to me. At first the girls thought it was lightning, but then realized it was a meteor streaking across the sky.
Tonight, 12/27/13, I observed a meteor coming straight down out of the sky and probably hit the ground. I was driving home from work at about 2230 and was out in the country. I know exactly where I was when I saw it, but would need to get the exact names of the intersecting roads to fill out a report. The description physically matched what the girls saw in color and brightness, but came straight to earth. I was a few miles north of Whitten, IA on the bkacktop. I was headed north and the fireball was off to my left- the northwest. I am certain it hit less than a 1/2 mile from me in a field. If I had access to a snowmobile I would go and search for it. I do not feel that it completely disintegrated. I am pretty sure I am the only one who saw this. It was not very close to any houses and no other cars were in the area. Not far after the place where I witnessed this, I turned left on to Hwy 175 from the Whitten blacktop. On the Hwy 175 curves just east of Eldora, a Hardin County Sheriff was had someone stopped. They may have seen the meteor I saw. St the angle they were stopped it would have been to their south and maybe some east. |
