I did not personally get to see the event, but I noticed the anomaly in my running astrophotography rig. I could immediately tell it wasn't a plane, and not likely a satellite. I double checked stellarium for known satellites at the time of the photograph, and nothing was nearby. I then checked the open reports here and saw at least a dozen sightings, which all but confirmed to me that it's likely a fireball. Since I did not get to see the actual event, some values are my estimations based on other reports, and the details I have from the frame I provided. The photo is a 3 minute sub frame that ended at 22:44 CST, so it was somewhere in the 3 minutes preceding that. This is also the horse head nebula which can provide very detailed positioning data, albeit in a small field of view, and with not quite exact timing. According to stellarium, my field of view is about 2 deg 13 min x 3 deg 19 min. It's also clearly very bright, as Alnitak is in this frame, which is ~1.7? magnitude, and over a 3 min sub frame, with this streak seemingly out shining the star, even though it will have whizzed through the frame. Seems to have been green in color, but a little tough to tell given the brightness blowing out the camera sensor. The image provided is just a screenshot showing the timestamp of the frame. I also have the raw .fits file available. |
