Reports Report 5210am (Event 5210-2024)

Observer
Name John C
Experience Level 3/5
Remarks We were camping and I was awake in the early morning with my eyes closed. I don't know the exact time as it did not occur to me to check the time. The moon had already set and the sky was perfectly clear. Suddenly the night sky lit up as if a bright halogen headlight pointed at my face had been flipped on. I immediately opened my eyes and saw the fireball falling vertically directly to the south of our camping location. The size and brightness of the fireball remained constant for the few seconds from when I first saw it until it disappeared below the (relatively low, flat) southern horizon. The diameter of the fireball appeared to be approximately 1/2 the diameter of the sun (quite large). 15 to 30 seconds after the fireball disappeared below the horizon the distinct "boom" was heard.
