My wife and I were both sitting in our spa pool (jacuzzi) and were both facing approx NorthNortheast and looking up at the night sky when it appeared to the right of us coming over our neighbour’s house and trees. It headed straight across the night sky in a shallow arc from right to left as we were looking at it. It took about 3 seconds to traverse the sky before it stopped burning (both the head and tail were both extinguished) just before it went over the single storey part of our house roof to our left. It felt like it was very low (much lower than any others we have seen) and was dipping slightly in trajectory; it was the ‘closest’ and brightest meteor we have ever seen. It had a clear bright white tail that extended about half our field of view (between our fence on the right and our house roof on the left). While my eyes focused on the overall size and direction as well as the length of the tail, my wife noticed the ‘head’ was glowing orangey-red. She reports that the ‘head’ was roughly spherical (but uneven) in shape and about 2cm in diameter when holding the thumb and forefinger apart at arms length, and it’s diameter was proportionately about 3 times the ‘width’ of the tail. |
