Remarks Observer: Jeff Barbour Source of Astro.Geekjoy.Com (now archived available only) 11:05PM Friday, July 22, 2022 Bolide Event Bolide became visible some 15 degrees southwest of Arcturus. Initially appeared as a point source of similar stellar magnitude (0) then traversed at a 70 degree PA (4:30 o'clock) from Arcturus to the WNW. It brightened and expanded rapidly to roughly 10 arc-minutes (1/3rd moon) in size before disappearing behind foliage some 2+ seconds and 25 degrees celestial traversal later (as a gentle arc). Luminous trail persisted throughout passage. No sound, nor smokey trail. Color metallic blue-white with a final surface brightness between that of Luna and Sol. (On average, magnitude -7 in luminosity). Suspected metallic. Given starting altitude of 20 miles and 30 degree path, probably came down 40-50 miles WNW of John Day (guessing here). A beautiful and unexpected sight after retiring from a really `deep sky` kind of imaging night. Carpe Noctem! jeff
