It appeared at first to be a low flying small plane or jet due to its altitude, brightness and speed. I think it may have been visible longer than what I observed due to trees and buildings obstructing my field of view.

Flash was about as bright as the lights on a low elevation aircraft. It broke into two main pieces with several (4-6) smaller pieces trailing it before appearing to burn out.
