Remarks It was at least an hour til sunset with the sun still above the horizon - so the western sky was still quite bright. The fireball was in the western sky south of the sunset but just north of Mt. Wilson from our perspective. It was visible for between 8 and 10 seconds. Very bright orange color which would have easily been visible against a full moon - hence the high magnitude report. It left a fire trail (train) lasting a couple of seconds but also a smoke trail in two parts - a higher part and a lower part. These smoke trails persisted in the sky for 10 - 20 minutes and were easily visible. The smoke trail appeared to be closer to us than more distant clouds visible on the horizon.
