It looked like it could have been a very nearby bottle rocket, as it was travelling faster across the sky than I'd expect a fragmenting meteor to travel, but others across the SF Bay saw it as well.

When I first saw it there were 2 or 3 bright closely-spaced pieces which quickly broke apart into 15-20 pieces, dimming as they went.
