I was on my back deck with lights on. The bright white flash was viewed through the clear openings in my trees. Then continued behind heavy tree leaves that hid it from view. Not sure if it was going by straight from Rt to Left or coming more towards me from Right to left. I can clearly view the North Star from my deck. Big Dipper, etc.
Orion was rising in the east all winter. I watched Jupiter and Saturn's convergence back in December. Seen a lot on nice meteors over the years. This was about the third largest one. The biggest was back in the early 1990's when that giant green one about the size of the full moon, and as bright as stop light Green section, appeared in the southern sky at 2:50 am and slowly crossed the sky heading towards the east. I called the Richmond VA Airport Tower ( non emergency Police told me to ask them) they told me that the workers on the tarmac had reported seeing it. I asked if it was picked up by their radar... And he said they couldn't give out that information...bummer. It was reported in the newspaper that pilots had reported it and called it the Granddaddy of all meteors.. it had been reported from NY to VA Beach, VA and was seen as far west as KY. To me it came out of the south. And disappeared near Va Beach. I don't know how the people in NY saw it? I was walking in the UPS parking lot on 9600 blk Coach Rd, Richmond VA. 23234. |
