Regarding time of sighting: I was driving eastbound on Hwy 120; approaching the loop entrance to Hwy 99 N. I believe I saw the fireball meteor after 22.00, but before 22.30—that’s why I entered a time of 22.15 into the time field on the form. I can see that another viewer from Olancha, CA, reported seeing a fireball at 22.06. I think it is very possible that I witnessed the same fireball witnessed from Olancha at 22.06, since I am very unsure of the exact time. I recall glancing at my car clock while driving around the interchange loop, and I seem to recall either 10:07 or 10:17. My car clock may not be accurate, anyway. My first thought was that this meteor may have struck the Sierra Nevada Mountains, or east of the Sierras. I called a friend who knows more about meteors, and he said, “You saw a fireball!” Thank you for the opportunity to report what I saw, and I hope my report is helpful. What I witnessed was quite spectacular; especially considering the brightness of the sky with the moon and high-up clouds reflecting the moonlight. It was by far the biggest and brightest meteor I’ve ever seen. I would really like to know where it ended up (striking the ground, or over which area it vaporized?) |
