Unfortunately this was observed as we drove due west on I-40 beginning at Mile marker 192.I was a passenger looking left or due south .The glow was the brightest astronomical object aside from our Sun I have witnessed in the sky. Trees lining the road partially obscured our view and I could not acquire a distance estimate, initially it paralleled the cars route barely overtaking us. First appearing at an azimuth of appr. 170 degrees S.S.E. in the rear drivers window to finally the left side of the front windshield in our S.S.W. It was so low on the horizon tracking its exact trajectory or directional azimuth through trees was impossible. It seemed to parallel our due west course on I-40. Due to its seemingly slow speed, long observation time (around 10 seconds), unusually low angle of attack and partially obscured intermittent appearance behind the trees I assumed it was very close and we BRACED FOR ITS IMPACT! It was that bright and large. At arms length it was Walnut sized and formed a perfect tear drop shape. Of course the trees prevented me from noticing any diminishing size and true direction of travel which appeared to be SSW however this may have been much closer to a due south heading .All in all the largest ,brightest, lowest, slowest, uncolored and longest FIREBALL I had the pleasure to witness. In fact I knew others had to have witnessed this and this is how I found your web site. K.H. |
