I was with two other people at the time who are not trained observers. One of these people said "OMG, look, it's a comet" and that's when I looked up and saw the fireball begin breaking up.

The fireball "flickered" a bit and a large piece fell off and curved downward from the bottom. There also appeared to be a couple more fragments that trailed the main fragment. After the fragmentation the fireball didn't persist much longer and just sort of winked out.
