For many years my wife and I would often go out during the height of the August meteor showers from many different vantage points depending on where we were at the time...Erie, Pennsylvania, Chicago or Ithac, NY. Always fun, often not sure if we actually saw what we thought we saw but when a good one was seen by both of us (not that often...) it was always a treat. The fireball I saw today was not in that category....I was driving, it was just at dusk only darker than normal due to a cloud cover in the west. I was headed east along a very straight and open section of I-87 with light traffic. The fireball occurred directly in front of me. It was not a streak across the sky but rather started streaking as bright as lightning at the point I could see through my windshield at the top edge and almost perfectly straight down toward the horizon bursting into a fireball about 3/4 of the way down before disappearing just above the horizon. It caused me to exclaim "Holy Crap...did you see that" to my wife in the passenger seat...who, alas, had her eyes closed. But she knew by my reaction that I had seen something truly spectacular! |
