Remarks I was walking the dog with a headlamp on, trained toward the ground about 20 feet ahead of me. The neighborhood was dark. Interior and exterior house lights were out. The ground outside of the headlamp beam began to get light. At first I thought there was a car coming up behind me, but there was no sound. It got so bright, I actually cowered reflexively. The ground illumination was similar to what one would expect from a roman candle at close range. I first noticed the fireball at about 75 degrees as it entered my field of view from behind. This was easily the brightest celestial event I have witnessed in my 52 years. Needless to say, my heart was racing after the sight.
