I was driving home, headed north up the Hamakua Coast of the Big Island. I suddenly became aware that the entire sky was becoming brighter than on the brightest full moon nights here, as if someone was suddenly turning the brightness level all the way up. An open field was just then to my left, and my left peripheral vision caught what seemed like a sudden giant full moon glaring white at the top of my driver’s side window. I looked to the left and saw a huge flaming ball like a fat finger in the sky over the open sky to my left. It was so gigantic, bright, sudden, and unlike anything I have ever seen firsthand, that I was shocked by it. I exclaimed out loud and swerved at the sight of it before quickly looking to the road to straighten out. I looked back and it was gone. This was at approximately 12:17 a.m. Including the seconds the sky was growing suddenly bright before I saw the fireball to my left, the whole thing may have been as short as 5 seconds or as long as 7 seconds.
I have seen meteors of many sizes while driving or even while not driving of course, but never, ever have I seen anything like this. It was huge. As incredible as it was to behold, I was shaken the rest of the 9 minutes driving till I reached my home. |
