Remarks | This was truly a remarkable spectacle, brilliantly visible with streetlights on either side of me. We were looking up at the constellation Leo when it caught our eye to the southeast and drew a long shallow line across the sky to the northwest over several seconds. We were gasping with wonder. I asked my friend immediately for the time and I reckoned azimuth and altitude hoping to find a site like this where I could report it. The reddish color appeared near the head of the fireball (the leading edge and bottom). It grew brighter for a while then began to fade. It was still illuminated before it passed out of our view behind a tree to the northwest. I ran out in the street trying to keep sight of it and to see if it would persist to the horizon, but there was no further trace. It really appeared as if something were "burning" up...being consumed by its long, slow passage through the atmophere. Marvelous! |
