My initial impression was that I had seen a firework or flare. It was the distance travelled and sustained brightness that made me realise I had seen some sort of meteor or fireball. The fact that I initially thought I had seen a firework is indicative of either the closeness or the brightness of the body.

Remarks
There was an unusual rumbling noise afterwards. It wasn't particularly loud or deep. My flat is a few metres from a main road and has a railway line running a few hundred metres away so it could have transport noise, but not something I've heard before.
