I was looking West toward New York City. I saw a very bright and large white light that appeared straight on. I thought it was local air traffic with a large landing light. It appeared to get larger then I noticed it was actually travelling perpendicular to me. It did not appear to be moving very fast. after it had moved approximately 90 degrees in the sky from first sighting it dimmed slightly to yellowish color and then burst, and fragmented. It contained at least 12 fragments that illuminated in a whitish color and proceeded on a downward trajectory while still travelling Eastward. The fragments lasted approximately 3 seconds. I would estimate it travelling over Long Island Sound. I would also estimate it broke up off the city of Bridgeport with the fragments travelling to approximately New Haven.
