I'm certain it wasn't a firework (being new years eve). It was travelling in what appeared as a straight line trajectory from my perspective. It reminded me of footage of the space shuttle Columbia breaking up on re-entry with all the debris. I'm an aeronautical engineer by training.

Remarks
The fireball was bright with a flaming tail. Pieces were breaking off, falling away and disappearing. I lost sight of the fireball out the side of the window but it was not yet extinguished and still going. I didn't hear anything at the time because I was playing bagpipes with ear plugs in.
