Remarks Wife and I driving northbound on I95 in NC (near Enfield before Halifax), when it came almost straight down out of sky and appeared to be about a mile or two ahead of us. Expected to see a fire or impact site, but never saw anything (now realize it wasn't nearly as close as we thought). Was bright purple and had what i'd call sparks coming off of the tail and a little off of the sides of it (maybe that's what was meant as fragmentation in your question) as it descended. We slowed down, somewhat in shock, and somewhat expecting the road to be blocked/closed ahead due to the impact. It only lasted approx. 1-2 seconds so I wasn't able to photograph or video it (reached for my camera, at my feet, but not quick enough to get anything). Seemed like a once in a lifetime event - exciting and scary.
