Reports Report 791a (Event 791-2017)

Experience Level 3/5
Remarks Initial elevation above horizon and duration were estimates based on the observation of the object made in a moving vehicle. I feel the elevation above horizon is accurate and it was based on the assumption that the width of my hand at arm's length covers about 10 degrees so I estimated that the object path covered about 3 hand widths plus or minus. The object disappeared behind some trees along the street and it wasn't possible to determine whether it persisted from our vantage point. Clouds were obscuring all stars and the moon (if it would be visible at this local time) was not visible. The object was clearly visible as multiple, 2-4 pieces as it fell. Since we were in a moving vehicle we did not hear or feel anything that we could tie to the observation so this is just a visual sighting report. I estimate the duration to be about 3 seconds tops. Though I am a casual observer of meteors, stars, planets, etc. I have been lucky to be able to see several bolides over the last 20 years due to spending a lot of time on the roads driving at night. I feel that this one would have been one of the best ever with no clouds and likely would have lit up the neighborhood.

Remarks Object was in at least two pieces and was bright enough to be seen clearly through cloud cover. It had rained 40 minutes earlier and there were persistent low clouds covering the region. Object appeared through the clouds as a green trail with a bright green source and brightened as it fell disappearing behind some trees along the road just above the horizon.
