I'm not sure if there was a terminal flash (not experienced enough to know): there was a flare of light at the beginning/within the first second, just before/as the color was becoming infused with green. From my brief, amateur reading, I would assume this is a fireball, because of its brightness and size. It's hard to remember, but it was quite bright, easily as bright as the moon. I have seen plenty of "shooting stars" and this was nothing like those: the former always strike me as quite far away, and like a line of white, cold, small light, just for a moment. This was BIG, and occurred for 3-4 seconds. And though I couldn't see defined flames coming off of it, it seemed to pulse and have a definite shape; "fiery" was the adjective that kept coming to mind. The color began as almost a fiery orange overlaid by a bright white, then as it fell it lost the orange and got green tinged, particularly around the edges. The green was a shade that reminded me of northern lights. In the last second or so of its descent it got smaller and lost the green, so it was just bright white. Then it disappeared. It left no smoky trail behind. I didn't hear an accompanying noise, but I was on a Chicago rooftop, so that's not very reliable evidence. |
