I have seen quite a few meteors during showers, and this was quite a good deal brighter than any of them and travelled straight down with no lateral movement until it fragmented.

The white light split into three roughly even lights, one that continued downwards and two that went off to wither side though still generall travelling straight down. the fragments disappeared almost as soon as I had seen them (much less than a full second.)
