This event appeared to me as either a UFO, a military launch / test. It appeared to move too slow for a comet or asteroid in my opinion.

Remarks
The fire ball looked like a rocket with a trail behind it moving steadily across the sky but nowhere as fast as a comet/ shooting star. It had a trail of light/gas behind it. It appeared to have pieces falling behind it as it was going out of my sight towards the East over San Ramon, CA
