Remarks | I was outside near Overlook Park (the highest point in Portland, Maine), facing SE when the sky lit up; I turned and saw a single long bright trail go down below my horizon to the north; unlike anything I have ever seen before, the object and trail were much brighter than the moon; I heard no sound and could see no residual material; the momentary brightness of the sky was greater than one sees with typical fireworks, but it was not blinding; few clouds, good seeing and a lucky unobscured angle of view made this spectacular, despite the brightness of the mostly full moon. |
