Reports Report 855u (Event 855-2016)

Observer
Name Jonathan K
Experience Level 3/5
Remarks This was the brightest meteor I have ever seen (brightness was 3 to 5 times as bright as Venus which was startling to see in Manhattan) It fell quickly and quietly at a steep angle until it could not be seen behind the buildings. I am sure any observer on the Empire State building facing north would have seen it. I listened for a boom but heard nothing. It may have fallen miles north of the city and at that angle I am guessing New Jersey unless it disintegrated. It was as bright the whole time I watched it from way up in the sky to where it passed below the skyline (from my angle it was east of the Empire State Building and definitely west of 3rd Ave which I used as markers in this survey). In terms of brightness I thought of a small LED flashlight - much brighter than Venus and even seemed larger.
