We saw it while lobster fishing off Redondo beach at night. We thought for sure it was an emergency flare so we went north looking for a vessel in distress. A boat off Malibu radioed the coast guard and had a long conversation about it over the VHF. If that conversation was recorded by the coast gaurd I'll bet you'll love to hear thier account--that will also help you ID the time down to the minute it happend. We were out 2 miles off shore and got a great look at it considering how dark it was out there. I thought it was a flare 200 yards away. It had a wicked curve to it that almost appeard to start heading up and then slope down towards the ocean.
