Saw nearly the same thing in the late 1990s over Herndon, VA. I was facing toward Bayshire Lane from Crestview road. Only that one was much bigger and closer to the ground. Same characteristics. Figured it was part of a defunct satellite finally coming down. Never thought I'd see another!

As it went across the sky, small pieces flecked off randomly and turned from red to orange/yellow as they cooled. Like the air was blowing away what resembled hot metal bits as the integrity of the meteor was slowly consumed.
