Remarks I was relaxing, watching the sky observing jets approaching the West Palm Beach airport in the early evening approximately a half-hour before sunset. The fireball (if it was that) approached from the South flying horizontally towards the North. I first saw it through the clouds in the distance towards the east likely over the ocean. I initially mistook it for a jet and pointed out to several others with me "Look, there comes another jet". It appeared to have a long cylindrical shape about the size of a jet that was glowing about the same brightness as the reflection of the sun on the sides of the jets we had been observing. As it emerged out of the clouds, I noticed flames (a tail) coming out of the rear and realized it was not a jet, but something else. I watched it for a few seconds, I would guess about 5 seconds, when it suddenly began glowing in a large bright white light, getting brighter and brighter in an expanding brightness, apparently having exploded. I would estimate it's speed to have been constant and about the same speed as the jets we had been observing, probably 300-500mph, possibly more. It was flying horizontally and not falling to earth. It was reported on the evening news as a fireball. No one had a picture or video of it. Someone also reported that it had a tail. Some reported a collision between two airplanes, probably the explosion catching their attention, and I believe helicopters were out searching. Though it was many years ago, I have not previously reported this and remember it quite vividly. I believe people as far south as Miami had reported sighting it, according to the news, which I do have a dvd recording of the news segment on it that day.
