Remarks On our way out of town, 3 hours earlier, around 4:30pm, we noticed what sounded like sand on our windshield. Without any trucks in front of us, we didn\'t know where it would have come from. My initial thought. My next thought was to look up to see if anything was about to fall. May be totally unrelated, but I recall hearing similar sand sounds on our windshield shorty after we noticed the burst. Made me curious about whether it was a meteor, asteroid, or space debris (man-made or otherwise) versus a plane that just blew up. We both agreed it appeared to have landed after it burst, though. The tail never disintegrated in the several seconds we watched it, mostly me because my husband was driving. It was shocking, confusing, curiosity provoking and strange/odd, but also very scary to think what it may have been, (i.e. a missile, a bomb, debris, asteroid, shower of meteors to comes, a plane full of passengers, etc.

Concurrent Sound

Delayed Sound
Observation No
Remarks We were in our car listening to music with the windows up. We did not notice any sounds but possibly due to that alone.
Persistent train
Observation Yes
Duration 6s
Length -1°
Remarks My husband and I saw what at first looked to be a falling star, but it was still really very bright; but, as it fell, it suddenly burst with a very bright flash with red and orange with its core still very bright white although it was smaller in that second it sparked into the large burst of bright, bright lights ans colors. As it fell, its tail continued and barely faded till we just saw it fall past the trees. It seemed to be fairly close, within only a few to several hours, perhaps still in mostly West (/NW) area of Windham.
Terminal flash
Observation Yes
Remarks The flash was very shocking. Sudden and a bit strange. It was more like a flash of a blast in air. Very, very bright, and had red and orange around it once it seemed to burst very suddenly and surprisingly...so much so, the other 6 or 7 cars in front of us were all going 40 miles an hour, braking, and seemingly as dazed and confused as to what just happened.
Fragmentation
Observation Unknown
