Remarks |
We were outside walking the dog on our street, which is situated in primarily farm land, 35km SSW of Ottawa. At first we thought it was lightening because the light was pervasive---it lit the ground around us, at least initially. I looked up and saw the fireball and its trail. There was a thin, sparse layer of high altitude clouds, which might have served to diffuse the light a bit, but the fireball and tail were easily seen, and most of the sky was illuminated. I actually think it was brighter than a full moon, but my wife disagrees (never happened before ;). Regardless, we were walking in a northerly direction, and I was looking at eye level, or lower, when suddenly the ground was lit, and I looked up way up and to the right to see the fireball high in the ENE sky.
After the fireball, I was able to confirm that the cloud was transparent enough that I could see a few stars through it. |
