Remarks It zoomed into view, had a fire tail but not a long one, then as I watched it seemed to explode with fire shrapnel showering down and then the sky was dark.

Remarks See above. Large meteor with bright but fairly short tail, suddenly exploded and glittering shrapnel dropping down. I do not believe anything reached the ground.
