I just saw a video of a fireball on a national news program weeks ago. I'd never heard of the phenomenon. What I saw in person was almost dead on to the video. Unfortunately I was in my car but the experience was definitely real. It happened so fast. The amount that it lit up the sky was just crazy. And as mentioned earlier it was a cloudy night, and although I had my radio on I didn't hear or feel any sort of boom.

Remarks
Was driving. Saw out of side vision, looked again and it made a flash that lit up a portion of the sky on a cloudy night, then seemed to change direction a bit and was out of sight almost immediately.
