At first sight I thought it was a firework, but it... traveled slow about 20 feet across the horizon. Then I thought it was an UFO, but you could see it getting smaller and smaller. It was round and small, orange in color. And it had a reddish orb around that was kind of oblong if you will, with the back end dragging in the wind. It was pretty cool! Like nothing I ever seen before! it had an red glow around it. Show more |

A welcome surprise! I did witness this from inside... my parked car. My window was closed, so I did view this through the glass.
I also got out of the car and took a compass reading from my iPhone.
I used the roofline of the nearby Kmart store as a landmark for the bearing.
Fireball went dark before it went below the horizon.

I guess I would have to say the size...and the cla... rity of the fireball and train. SO UNBELIEVABLY AWESOME! Neither....the firey ball simply disappeared well above horizon in S. SW skies...like something swallowed it up.....at least 80 degrees. I guess I would have to say the size...and the clarity of the fireball and train. SO UNBELIEVABLY AWESOME! fireball size = baseball size held up front of me..& compare to size I see in sky. Initial color..head of ball...yellow...then red/orange colors into flame w/ more yellow (flame distance would be approx. fist to midway up to elbow.....then into whitish trail very visible across sky above me..which would be longer than fist to length of arm...definitely longer.. I know I caught my breath the whole time. The "smoky tail" of the whole sighting didn't really start dissipating until the fireball disappeared out of sight...sw direction above me. I saw a very similar one from same geographical area, late summer /early fall, 2010..went high across Northeast sky and disappeare into the NE...N sky going downwards....only approx 2 sec. sighting, then. Approximately 5 minutes after seeing the fireball ... I also saw a shooting star: colorless, much farther away, and extinguished almost immediately after I saw it. The fireball appeared to stay intact and extinguished all at once. It was similar to an ember in a camp fire that glows brightly just before dimming completey. Driving east on I-80 and noticed a light thinking ... it was an airplane but suddenly an orange tail appeared and then vanished. Looked like it would hit the ground while still burning but did not. I thought it was an airplane nav light at first, but a)it just suddenly appeared, b) it was too big or the plane would have been at 100\', c) intensity was changing. it was just at dusk, we were sitting in an open ai... r restaurant, looking out over the ocean in the direction of the island of Lanai. We clearly saw a bright object in the sky with a clear train behind it. There were 4 of us who viewed this object as it appeared to be brightly burning and then quickly disappear. I described it as looking like a bright sparkler. ... It burst into pieces and then ended two seconds later maybe The train went all the way across the sky to the point that I thought it was an airplane for a minute. There was a glowing train and smoke after that. It got bright white and broke into smaller white bits like a sparkler. It was just after sunset so the sky was still quite bright with color just before dusk. I\'ve never seen a shooting star (fireball) in such a bright sky. Amazing! Show more |

I have seen 3 other meteorites fall since moving t... o the Catskills in NY, all with green fire/flash associated but none like this; it was quite extraordinary and I really expected to hear a large boom! It first appeared as an extremely white ball (like landing lights on a close incoming aircraft) at the top left (NW) of the window that I was looking out... proceeded from the inital corner of window at about a 45degree angle into the bottom window and dropped below the horizon (NE.) I was pleased to see it. I am a very early riser.... I had never seen a "falling star" before, any where near that big 'ol one I saw this morning. I was immediately reminded of the ones I saw on tv of big notable fire balls.
I'd love to know feedback if anyone else saw it. 4:00am is approximate time, may have been 20 minutes earlier or later. The main body of the thing was a really large looking flaring bright, arc-welder white, and it had a thick tail, maybe 3 times the length of the main body, longer. This tail was equally bright and shedding equally bright and burning baby meteors headed in the same dierction, though quickly \ Show more |

Awesome experience. Never saw on persist for a ful... l 4 seconds! Must have been a huge meterite as it was about half the size of a street light as seen from across the street. Huge blue ball at least 4x size of venus with a clear red triangular train. My thumbnail estimate based on a little math is that it was 9 miles away, lasting a full 4 seconds. I cannot say for certain how high up the object or... iginated. I saw it while driving. I had stopped for a stop sign (facing roughly north), and saw the object out my side window when I looked left to check for oncoming traffic. It was rather large (larger than any other star in the sky - about four times the size of venus) with a short blue green tail. It was moving very quickly down towards the horizon, slightly right to left. I lost sight of it behind the buildings lining the road, but did not hear any sound, nor see any other flashes of light. the yellow-white light I saw was moving downward towards the horizon, on a slight right to left trajectory. the blue-green tail was not much longer than the size of the object itself. I saw the meteor brighten in the sky and saw it streak perhaps at a 20 degree angle to the vertical. I recall seeing a bright ball portion near the front of the streak but not at the front. The ball appeared to be preceded by part of the streak. As the meteor fell it brightened, leaving a streaked path. Just before it disappeared it appeared to brighten, not exactly a flash. Show more |

I was walking in our neighborhood with my wife, wh... o also witnessed this spectacular meteor. We had enough time to comment on it - I completed the sentence, "Oh my God that is the longest meteor I've ever seen!" several seconds before it disappeared behind the tree line. It appeared that very small bits of the meteorite were separating and burning up almost immediately - the fragments didn\'t leave any trails. The meteorite seemed to be bubbling as it burned up. Greenish white glowing train lasted longer than any meteor I\'ve ever seen. I\'m convinced this object hit the earth. If I were to guess where it hit, I think it would be somewhere in the vicinity of Cross Anchor, SC or maybe Woodruff, SC. Show more |

I was driving from norton toward attelboro with my... girlfriend and saw what had to be some space debree shooting downward from left to right from the sky. It looked like a green glowing object shooting very low from the sky towards the ground....I imagine it hit the ground within 10 miles. It was not a firework, it was not a flare, not a plane. It was very low and very very clear. it looked like a comet with a glowing ball and a tail that I believe was redish with some white...long tail.. it went below my point of view, never slowing down, never dimming...straight toward the ground at the speed of a shooting star. I have seen shooting stars, flairs, meteors in the sky...this was the closest brightest thing I have seen and no doubt it hit the ground somewhere...no doubt Show more |

It seemed to be bigger than any star, meteorite or... comet I've ever seen. I would say about 1/8 the size of the full moon the other night. If I held a dime at the end of my outstretched arm, it would be about 3/4 the size of a dime. Or the size of the tip of my pinky finger (circular wise). the whole thing was glowing, the circle first bright white with yellowish orange glow outline, attached with tail of same bright white, Brightest white I ever saw in the sky with yellowish orange glow outline, no changes, It was as big and brighter than my neighbors floodlight on front of his house... I was facing his house which is west of mine, I watched it from up above go from upper left to my lower right until it disappeared because his house was in the way. Show more |

The things/questions that crossed my mind beside t... he thought that maybe it was a meteor: Oh, I just saw a shooting star! Was that a comet? Gee, that could have been a scud missle! Darn, I'm in a car with the windows closed so I can't hear anything. What was that? Should I be scared? I wonder if anybody else saw that. When it first appeared it looked big and had a long train/tail as it moved in toward the earth at a downward angle for a landing. I only saw it for a few seconds, and it and the tail both looked bright white to me, and then in a few seconds it (with its tail) was gone! Show more |

It was very big and bright, It looked like the aft... er-burn of a missile coming from the sky, but without sound. It was a bright blue fireball, with a long trailing whitish blue tail, rapidly descending. There was overcast as well and it was clear in sight, so i know it was close, maybe over Norwalk or Wilton Show more |

I was traveling through Northampton, Mass. at appr... oximately 6:48 pm when I noticed a fairly large fireball traveling at a moderately fast rate of speed. It was traveling southwest I think. I thought it was a plane or meteor. I found it strange at the size and speed of the object. It actually stunned me and I thought I was seeing things, but apparently I wasn’t. It lit up the sky in its vicinity and had flames in the rear of it. I was driving and thought at first it was a shooti... ng star, but realized it was too large and it was a green colored ball that was falling. Kind of like an airplane falling from the sky and it had a green tail on the end of the ball. It eventually burned out, but seemed like it was so close to the hills where I live. Show more |

I was pulling into my neighborhood off Rt. 235 in ... Southern Maryland and saw this bright streak of fire in the north sky. It was moving east to west. My car radio clock showed 6:48. The streak lasted about five or six seconds. I thought of two things when I saw it. First, maybe someone is celebrating New Years early and popped off some fireworks. Second, gosh that looks like the footage of the shuttle accident a few years ago as it broke up in the atmosphere. The streak of light was white and yellow with greens and blues breaking off of it. I'd estimate that it was less than 45 degrees above the horizon. I thought for sure it was just fireworks except our dinner guests arrived about 20 minutes later saying they saw the same thing through the trees from where they were driving 10 miles south. I'd love to know if this actually landed somewhere. What appeared to be fragmentation to me was blue and green and yellow offshoots or sparks coming off the front of the train/trail. the train was visible throughout the duration of the six seconds of light in the sky. It didn\'t seem to fade, just stop although at that point I was looking at it through trees while driving. Show more |

I was driving east on US 40 west of Hagerstown, MD... and saw a greenish white light in the ENE sky--light(s) like that of an aircraft, with the expectation that it was going to land at HGR (the local airport). It then exploded mid-air in fragments with the light quickly fading (unlike a firework). Looked like a cheaply done explosion in an old Sci-Fi movie or "Star Trek" (original 1960s series).
My nephew's sister over on Maryland's Eastern Shore (Denton) also said she saw it when I posted to my Facebook last night.

The train towards the end of falling was no longer... visable. Once the train was gone the object broke into pieces and seemed to disintegrate into ash. As I was driving I looked up and saw a bright green light racing through the sky. I immediatley stopped to watch. At first I thought that this was a falling star but with the duration of the fall and the size of the object I just knew that it wasn't. I had never seen such a site...scary and beautifully exciting all at once. It was not falling completely straight it had a bit of an arch to it. It was close but not close enough to analyze it anymore than I did. The train did not appear for very long. It eventually disappeared and all together fireball and all just disintegrated into what looked like ash. Show more |

I was driving and saw what I first thought was a l... ighting flash. The sky lit up for a second. I looked up and saw a fireball running from my right to left moderately overhead. I had to dip my head down a little to see it out of my front windshield. I was facing almost directly north. I lost sight of it quickly behind some trees. It was hard to get a scale of reference for it, but I'd say that it was either very low or very large. I hope to find out more details about what it was ... that I saw. I initially called it a shooting star, but it was much larger than that. What an awesome experience. I'm sure this happens all the time, but I feel lucky to have seen it tonight! As an amateur I guess I can only say that it was glowing...I can\\\'t recall specific colors. I think I was so amazed that I didn\\\'t catch all the details. Show more |

Number of reports came in from a chat on http://lu... narmeteoritehunters.blogspot.com which appeared to be the same object. People were writing in from VA, MA, and MD.
I suspect that it was falling space junk (due to the sparks) but would be interested in hearing back about what it was. When I fist noticed it it caused a flash of light. Towards the end of the arc I saw some sparks that were fragmentation (sparks, as if you were watching someone saw through metal--yellow and falling to the sides). It then disappeared as if it burned out so I turned back to the house and a moment later the light \ Number of reports came in from a chat on http://lunarmeteoritehunters.blogspot.com which appeared to be the same object. I've never seen anything like this. I was driving... up I-95 from Richmond to Ashland. All of a sudden there was a bright fireball in the sky. Bigger than any shooting star I've ever seen. There were about ten cars in front of me on the highway all who braked hard and slowed down after seeing the object. It travelled from East to West and had a long (2 inches) on my windshield) trail behind it. It was really bright and large. It lasted a couple of seconds then it was gone. I seriously thought it broke through the atmosphere and I was anticipating and second explosion from impact! Nothing else happened. I called some of my family after it happened and to tell them about it. It had a bright white trail which turned yellow after I presume the atmosphere burned the object up Show more |

Largest meteor I have ever seen. Apparent diameter... was only slightly smaller than a full moon. Flame trail about 1 and 1/2 times the diameter of the fireball. Color of both fireball and trail was blue-ish white. Observed the event through a window. It's size and brightness initially made me think it was an aircraft with its landing lights on, but it was quickly apparent from the flame trail that it was a meteor. Show more |

It was awsome, like something you would see on tv.... Thanks Bill Fragmentation began after viewing for approx. 2 seconds. Then the fireball stretched and went yellow then it was gone. It began as a bright orange ball, then it began to loose small red to yellow pieces which fell earthward at a very sharp almost vertical angle. Show more |

We are not sure exactly where we were in Massachus... etts as we were traveling from Maine to Auburn, MA. We do believe we were about 1/2 hour north of Wocester either on Rt. 495 or Rt. 290 traveling South, Southeast. This was the largest fireball we had ever seen. Flash for a very short period of time was about the diameter of a quarter relative to the windshield of our Honda Pilot. Fairly short train about 1/2 the width of the windshield of our Honda Pilot visible until just after the fireball formed. Very quick burn out. Show more |

Yes, extreme flash. No fragmentation.
Pasted... from my blog with whole experience: Not sure if anyone had a chance to be out looking at the sky last night, but around 7pm eastern time, I took my pup outdoors. As I am waiting for him, a bright light appeared, almost like a camera flashed right beside me. I turned around, and in the sky was this long path, that was lit up in the sky. It was not like a normal meteor that we are all so use to experiencing. This came from the heavens, and looked like it was being gravitated down to the earth, but that is only from where I was standing. It was headed from space (straight up), to east. It was a long white light that lasted about a good 10 seconds, so I had enough time to quickly observe it. It was bright white, piercingly bright, like the third picture in this image, and a ‘lime green’ cast to one side, sort of like this shade, but running all down one side. It was absolutely beautiful, breathtaking. I’ve never seen a meteor so large or brilliant as this before. The only thing that made this look so odd, was its width. It wasn’t thin, with a tail. It it appeared extra wide, maybe because of the perspective, but not to sound like a crazy woman, but the best way to describe what I saw, was that it resembled a ‘beam me up scotty’ look. Nothing was on the news about it, and it seems it may have gone unnoticed, though crazy at that size! Anyway, it was eerie but genuinely one of my coolest experiences. It wasn't like the typical head/ball with a tail. It looked rather tubular. On my blogpost, I shared pics that I researched on Google that it looked a little like: http://starcana.com/blog/2010/12/29/thursday-december-30-horoscope They are just missing that 'see through' tubular view, unless it was an optical illusion from my view. I just never seen anything so magnificent. Let us know if someone has a pic or video of it. Thanks! Show more |

The train was as initially as wide as the fireball... and similar in color. Then it trailed or narrowed off but it was still the same white-yellow color and all seemed to disappear over the horizon at the same time. If anyone else reports this, I would like to be no... tified, only because I am curious as to what they saw (I don't want to know their identity). See previous note. Why would the landscape suddenly light up when the fireball exploded? Does that mean it was very close? If anyone else reports this, I would like to be notified, only because I am curious as to what they saw (I don't want to know their identity). I was standing in the middle of a park, away from street lights. The fireball was white in color, almost like burning sodium. It looked round. There was a trail flowing behind it, fanning it out. I happened to be looking up at the stars when I noticed the fireball directly overhead. It went for about 2 seconds in a straight line towards the northwest, then seemed to explode, but there was no sound. The most interesting thing to me was that a someone else came up to me about a minute later, and asked me if I had seen the trees in the park light up, like it was daylight for a second. The bystander did not see the fireball itself. Show more |

It wa highly visible over Route 66 between Manassa... s City and Dulles Airport area. I wouldn't be suprised that several of aircraft in the area, taking off or landing at Dulles, didn't see it or report it. Even the tower at Dulles may have seen it. Great spectical. I was sitting on my balcony (I live on the the thi... rd floor). While I was sitting out there I saw an extremely bright white light, it almost looked like it was coming towards me. It looked very similar to a headlight on an airplane but much closer than any airplane could get (safely). I was speechless at what I was seeing. As it headed over my apartment, I turned sideways in my seat to continue watching it. I then saw the long "tail" also white in color attached to the bright white light. I could only see so much until it was out of my view so I did not see if it continued or fizzled out. It was an amazing sight. Glowing train, attached to a bright white light. Show more |

I actually lost sight due to some trees. At first... I thought it was eitther someone shooting off fireworks or either a shooting star but it was to far up in the sky for a firework and the width of the train was wider than the trail you see on a shooting star. I have seen shooting stars all of which appeared white, this was green in color. The train I saw was going from north to south (I was facing west), it did not shoot straight across it came across at an arc. The way that a firework looks as its going up into the air with the trail of color behind right before it explodes is similiar to what it looked like only with a much greater size. Show more |

Please take my observations as a member of the gen... eral public with no knowledge of meteors. I went online to look for more information on what I saw, came across a link to report it on your site, and wanted to just let you know it was seen in my area. That's probably all the use my report will be. I know nothing about this ... am just a random person who saw it and went online to find out what I saw. So please excuse the nonscientific description -- all I can say is that it looked like a very bright ball leaving behind it bright, sharp sparkles. It may have ended in a flash but I\'m not sure. I was too surprised and too ignorant of this to register that kind of detail. Show more |

I saw another big meteroite in Boise Idaho many ye... ars ago. This one seemed brighter, but the other one was in the daytime. This object moved slowly accross the sky, like a helicopter only a quarter to a half mile off. It initally looked white, then elongated and changed to white and green, then broke apart and turned white, green and orange. The object initially looked like a single light source. Then it elongated to approximately 10 times its diameter. It initially was white, after it started to elongate it had green areas, when it started to break apart there were white, green and orange areas. This sighting was very exciting and slightly creep... y at the same time. I was alone at the time but live in a very populated area. There is an airport near by.....this was no airplane! As the object moved closer to the earth in it grew brighter and then burst in to a handful of fragments. The fragments were white and then turned to orange and then dissipated in to the dark sky. This sighting was very exciting and slightly creepy at the same time. I was alone at the time but live in a very populated area. There is an airport near by.....this was no airplane! The train was a sparking white dust that was very shirt lived. Show more |

The meteor disappeared behind a mountain range on ... the southern horizon so I did not see it all the way to the end. The train was glowing but faded to look like smoke. There appeared to be sparks within the smoke. There\'s a mountain ridge on the southern horizon and the meteor dissappeared behind it so I can\'t estimate the full length of the train. Show more |

I immediately noted the time this happened because... I was sitting in a parking lot in my car. I got out right away to listen for a sound, but my car was idling and I heard nothing. I was looking right over BWI airport and am used to seeing jets take off at night. It caught my eye because it was much brighter than a jet's takeoff light. It was definitely heading westwards. Hope this helps. Burned out very quickly - looked just like sparks falling but was over very fast. Show more |

First sighting for me, glad other's seen it as we... ll. Heavy cloud cover over Danbury that night, which explained how this fireball could appear out of no where and disappear in seconds, but what a sight. Sent an email to our local weatherman, then checked the web and found this sight on google. Thrilled that I can file this report and add to the knowledge about this amazing event. Show more |

It was amazing. My husband watches Meteorite Men all the time and I have never seen him so excited!! It was just remarkable to me considering the densi... ty of the cloud I observed it through. I described the flash in the previous section, the fragmentation was barely visible but I could tell what had happened despite the obstruction from the cloud. It was just remarkable to me considering the density of the cloud I observed it through. train was visible just a moment after the lead ball went out. If the length of train was 30 degrees, there was a brighter flash from the fireball at approx the 25 degree point just before it faded out. This was all seen through fairly low cloud cover... overall conditions were partly cloudy. Show more |

I just wanted to report this siting because I look... ed at the local news sites and no one had reported on it within 30 minutes after I had seen it while running. So I don't know if it was for sure a meteor, but it was traveling faster than any aviation equipment I've seen in my life. And I was in the military and have seen some fast planes. Did not see any. Glowing train but did not trail too far behind the meteor and left no smoke. It remained constant and was at cloud level until it went over the sierra mountains from where I was in Reno,NV Show more |

It missed the top of a snow capped peak on the eas... ter edge of the SIerras by 300 feet, just cleared it. Most spectacular thing I have ever seen!!!!! Long White Streak, traveled about 5 miles in 3 secs. Glowing white Train. This was not more than 1500 feet of the ground traveling west to east, it barely cleared the eastern ridge of the Sierras on the CA/NV border. It crossed highway 395 about 1 mile north of Pine Grove, CA. It was traveling almost horizontal. It literally cleared the snow capped peaks by 200-300 feet. Show more |

Thank you. This thing was spewing sparks/flames sideways as it went. There was a long white train behind the object of a consistent length. It was pitch-black with no moon. As the object passed from west to east I could clearly see the (it\'s hard to describe objectively) train which was mainly white and very bright - way brighter than the moon, but observable with the naked eye. As the object was passing in front of me, I could clearly see burning debris being pushed sideways from the front of the object. And then it just disappeared. My (untrained) guess it was at very high altitude, and what I witnessed was the object \'grazing\' on the high atmosphere, and then rapidly burning up on re-entry at high altitude? If you know what it was - I\'m guessing controlled/planned satellite burn up - or you have any images, I\'d love to get a copy as it was a ABSOLUTELY REMARKABLE sight. Pitch-black sky, star-light, standing on the Playa and this things travels relatively sedately across in front of me!! Mind blowing..! Show more |

We were driving south on 395 from Tahoe to Mammoth... and my son saw a bright green ball in the sky to our left. Then we (four of us) all saw it for at least 3 seconds. It disappeared for a second and then reappeared (behind a cloud?) again for several seconds before disappearing behind the mountains. It was much larger than any asteroid any of us have seen and was moving much faster than any plane. It was larger than Mars, probably twice the size. The main color was green or greenish blue with pink or magenta around it. It was bright enough to leave an after image but did not seem to have a real trail. Show more |

It came from the South west over our heads. We we... re driving in the Sierra Foot hills and so the vie was soon cut off by the hills. It was shortly before sunset, and it was very bright, like a large round blue bead - about as big as Venus looked this morning 12/27. We had not seen anything like this before, and found it lovely and remarkable. Show more |

It was dusk, not really dark yet, and we were dri... ving on a lonely rural desert highway near the California-Nevada border. The fireball was brilliant as it streaked across the sky in the twilight and disappeared behind a mountain peak then reappeared on the other side of the peak, continuing on until it disappeared for good behind another peak. It was moving very fast, yet it was visible long enough for me to say, "OMG look! DId you see that?," and for my husband then to say (as it reappeared), "I see it, oh wow!" Truly amazing!!!! I was sitting in my livingroom, it was still light... outside. My bay window faces north, and this thing came into view on the east side of the window, super bright, and lasted long enough for me to say "It's still going!" 3 times to my friend. Owens Valley is 10 miles across or there about, and the glowing trail streched the entire length before fading... just awesome. It was still light out and the thing lasted, glowing green for a few seconds. Show more |

We were driving north on 395 near Lone Pine. At f... irst I thought it was a low flying, very fast airplane and we were seeing it's green navigation light but it was a strange color. I had time to yell to my wife in the passenger seat "What in hell is that?". We both looked at it for about five seconds and then it disappeared behind a mountain in my opinion. My wife thought it just went out. Show more |

This fireball was big, about three times the size ... of a Venus in the sky. I was sitting right by the window, and it caught my attention. I watched it for what seemed like four seconds as it slowly glided from west-to-east in my field of vision. It had a bright green round head and the back of it was red. Looking through the window from this lighted room, I couldn't see a tail, and there was no visible explosion. It really looked a lot like the one above this form (LOL). It was cloudy around here during the eclipse the other night, and seeing this fireball from the comfort of my office chair certainly made up for that. I've seen hundreds of "stray" meteors, but this one is going in the top two sightings of my life. I did not see any flash or fragmentation, but I was damn sure hoping I would. (heh). The size of the fireball scared me. Simply put, I ... thought if this hits, we're all toast. It looked so big that when I saw an airplane in the distance, in comparison, the fireball looked like what I assume a space shuttle launch would look like if you were standing beneath the launch pad. And before I forget, it seemed to glide across the sky from north to south slowly, as if saying, "HEY LOOK AT ME!" It honestly felt like many minutes before it disappeared over the horizon, probably the most helpless period of time in my life. Seriously, the sheer size of this object in the sky had me frozen with fear. I hope someone else got to see this great sight! I... t was steller! I was in Fairfield County, In Ohio, just north of the City of Lancaster looking South/Southeast as I traveled south on State Route 37. It appeared in my regular field of view out the front of my windshield of my car. It appreared to be south/southeast towards Bremen, Ohio moving left to right towards the City of Lancaster or someplace farther south such as Suger Grove, Ohio. It was VERY bright and also VERY large. Was bluish ini color and had a VERY long and bright tail. Duration was approximately 20 seconds and disappeared below the horizon from my viewpoint. Possible impact to ground location is unknown, but from its large size and brightness, it is possible for touchdown. The fireball was VERY large in size to start out then as it neared the horizon (from my viewpoint) it appeared to fragment into many smaller pieces that continued to glow with a long tail blue in color Was a VERY bright glowing tail of bluish color that lasted for a long time as the fireball streamed forward. It was very bright almost sparkling but not like fireworks. the tail was about the 10degrees long. It appeared to me that it was coming down at maybe a 5-10 degree angle from above and that it could not be but a few miles away if that much. It dissappeared quickl as we have a privacy fence up. I've seen shooting stars in the past and they app... ear to be fleeting streaks far out in space. This fireball seemed unbelievably close that I thought it was a firework or missle only it appeared to be a round ball of fire with a fiery trail behind it. It moved much slower than a shooting star. I thought I would go home and turn on the news and hear of other sightings in the area but was surprised that I didn't. I would be curious if anyone else reported such a sighting Tuesday night in the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area. I was standing in the middle of an urban 2 lane street with 4 story buildings on either side. I noticed it directly overhead moving from east to west and it disappeared over the rooftops. I didn\'t see where it ended but it appeared to be low enough that I thought it would land somewhere off in the distance. Interesting that this occurred the early evening o... f a day when a very rare tornado hit the same area (EF-2). It was breathtaking to watch - thought at first it was a shooting star but just kept going, getting brighter, and turning green. I was speechless - could hardly tell my grandson in the back seat to look, but finally did (though he could not see it from the back seat). It's hard to estimate the total time. I didn\'t see the terminal flash, but my son who was driving from the west toward the east at the same time saw only a flash of light. I saw a fragmentation into two parts that held close together. I was looking down the street as I was driving. I ... saw a white streak through the top of my windsheild that was traveling from left to right and also appered to be traveling away from my position (it seemed more like up to down than left to right. I blinked (not puposely) and noticed the streak was much longer extending down to the horizon and the lead was large and brighter the the trail. It was very bright. I thought about where it had impacted and realized it had to drop into the Atlantic Ocean off the coast on NY and NJ. This thing must have come from directly over head as it very clearly move away from my location. The flash got brighter then fell behind trees. Show more |

I am amazed that this is the 5th fireball I've se... en this year. All 5 of them have been in approximately the same area of the sky and all while I was driving NE on I-94 towards Port Huron. The train was in 2 parts as if there were 2 objects entering the atmosphere one right after the other, or, the object skipped like a stone on water and made a \'broken\' train made up of 2 equal parts. It was slightly hazy and beginning to snow when I saw it so it may have actually been much brighter. The train was a gold-orange color with sparkles and lasted 1-2 seconds until it faded. Show more |

I was traveling northbound on US-235 (Broadway Ext... ension) in Oklahoma City, when I saw the object. It was to my left (west) and was headed in a N/NEasterly direction. It had a greenish yellow glow and appeared quite large, much larger than any other space object I have seen, with the exception of the moon. I first saw it about 60 degrees to my left (west) and when it disappeared (no blast), it was approximately 80 from the horizonline to the north. It lasted about 15 seconds. This occurred on the night of the Gemininds, but according to some, was too early in the evening to have been one. Show more |

WOW! My girlfriend and I were driving home from w... ork on Monday, Dec. 13. Not long after sunset around 5:45 p.m., we both saw a greenish blob (like an elongated snowball) falling almost straight down about halfway up the sky toward the Northwest. When I got home, I googled and saw that we were entering the Geminid meteor shower. I've seen numerous meteors over the years, but this was my first fireball. I'm an air traffic controller and noticed a light... moving pretty fast through the sky just after the sunset during twilight. When I looked up from my computer to see what could be moving that fast through the air, I was looking through a window shade in the tower and to make sure it wasn't a reflection off the ground (vehicle) I moved to view the object through a different window that did not have a shade on it. At this point I realized that it was not an aircraft or vehicle reflection and looked like a meteorite. Shortly after determining what it was it broke up into pieces and disappeared. Total time that I saw the object was maybe 2-3 seconds. Just before it disappeared it got slightly brighter and broke up into about 4 different pieces. In the telescope view it looks like a blue ball th... at is burning and facing towards us like a comet. It's very bright and no tail, I don't know what it is but I haven't seen something like it so bright. its a blue ball that is heading this direction, very bright and no tail that I can see. I cannot stress enough just how low the object was... - I was on a raised motorway and was looking straight across at it in its shallow progression. Quite frightening in its intensity. I have seen lots of shooting stars and this was nothing like those. It was VERY big and VERY low. Ive seen meteor showers - this was a lot closer th... an those. Just a single yellow flashlight beam kind of light in the sky. I assumed it was a meteor. I've seen single engine airplanes landing at night, my father kept a light plane at Phillipsburg airport. I've watched the lights on small planes over the night pararie, taking off and landing. That is the only comparitive night light I've seen in the sky. In a meteor shower the trails of light look more white and very tiny up in the night sky. Donna I saw only bright white/yellow trail in the sky. It was moving slowly in a slow downward curve. AT one point I saw bright sparkling bit behind the yellow trail, they disappeard and I saw just the yellow beam of light continue. Then it was just gone. No flash. Still in the air, but seeming low down. Ive seen meteor showers - this was a lot closer than those. Just a single yellow flashlight beam kind of light in the sky. I assumed it was a meteor. That is the only comparitive night light I've seen in the sky. In a meteor shower the trails of light look more white and very tiny up in the night sky. Donna Something made me look up and to my left as I was driving out of Glen Elder. It was yellowish, bigger than star. First saw trail then scatterings behind it. It was low, and seemed close to me. Then it disappeared = in the sky I think. Color was good and solid as it shot along a downward curve, shallow curve. Some glowing bits of light that I thought of as hot bits breaking off behind. The scattering bits visible briefly then did not see any more as the solid looking trail continued across and down. I hoped it would not fall into the Lake. My guess is it might have landed somewhere west and south of Downs, Kansas. Behind the light was dark, clear starlit sky. A strong wind was as I drove. I could see distant dark stuff of land behind it, maybe some low hills or trees. I waa driving to a family emergency in Phillipsburg, Ks. I was going only 50-55, in a cold car with little heat. I was alert, enjoying the night drive, watching for deer. Some miles later, I saw an law enforcement van stopped by the roadside - I want to say sometime after I'd driven to or from Downs, Ks. I did not see any other vehicle stopped so I did wonder why he was setting there. All this on HWY 24. Show more |

I already explained exactly what I saw and actuall... y would like very much to know what was that, since the journey was different to the downfall of a Meteor or a comet. It was very interesting to see that because it is first time that I see something out of the normal sky, clouds and sun rising or sunset. If you have some questions, just let me know. I already explained exactly what I saw and actually would like very much to know what was that, since the journey was different to the downfall of a Meteor or a comet. It was very interesting to see that because it is first time that I see something out of the normal sky, clouds and sun rising or sunset. If you have some questions, just let me know. I came in a Delta plane from Cincinnati to Orlando and I was in the window 19 E and probably 20 minutes before planning in Orlando Airport MCO I was looking ouside the sunset which I still could see, and suddenly I saw this big fireball, but the way it fell down was not in the way the comets or meteorites fall down, leaving a trail, I mean, the fireball fell down in opposite way, like a big tear. I am so sorry, I do not know how to explain it without the chance to make a draw. Anyway, when I saw it I asked the person in my side if he had seen that and unfortunatley he was reading and I had to keep quiet since no way to explain him what I saw and I just told him tha maybe it was a firework, but we were still to high and no chance that it were a firework because of the size. Ther was no trail and, in fact, I am not even sure... if it was a fireball. It seemed like some sort of super-compacted fire sphere every time I looked at it through the miniature Levenger telescope I currently possess and both appeared and diappeared about four-to-five times. I would descend, dissapear, and reappear in its origional position, never ascending from the ground, or at least not visibly. It didn't explode, merely appearing perfectly in shape and moving, retaining such form; it was as if looking at the strange appearance of miniature suns in the sky; like splendid, perfect balls of fire, utterly spherical. It was very strange, excitingly strange. Oh, and there was no flash, just stable presensce. Ther was no trail and, in fact, I am not even sure if it was a fireball. It did not seem that high when I had seen it. I wa... s driving to work and seen it clear as day out the drivers side window! If when talking about train. I would guess it was a couple second train. To be honest I was so amazed on the fire ball and the long trail of fire behind it! I am not sure of what train is. All I know it was not a plain going down! not a alien ship or shooting star. It was a ball of FIRE and it was was close and big. I am totally pump i had a chance to see this! I been telling everyone at work and they asked what I had to drink this morning. I laughed at them. I also asked one other coworker that lives in the same area I do and he said he also had seen it. All I can say is WOW and actually that is what I did say when I seen it. I was amazed at the size and closeness (proximity)... of what I saw. I have seen shooting stars etc but this was so large in my view it was incredible. I think that the shape of what I saw was also amazing, as it was not a single streak of light but a semi circle with trails at both sides. Amazing. Actually, the image above, on this last page.... is almost exactly what it looked like, except it was a semi-circle (like a crescent) and not a ball at the front. I saw a semi circle of light pass in front of me. At each side of the semi circle, was a blazing trail of light. A very bright, very fast moving, star-like white l... ight that, as it moved across the sky from south east to north west, much faster than a normal meteor shower like object, suddenly increased in brightness then disapeared while still well above the horizon (45 degrees aprox). I did not see any sign of fragmentation but there was light polution from traffic etc, and I was driving and watching other traffic. I was standing under the far edge of a covered dri... veway. I do not know where this fireball came from...direction...how far...anything other than when it cleared the cover. It was traveling very fast....visable for approximately 3 seconds. It appeared to be very close. As it all happened very fast and I was in shock at seeing this...it disappeared into a red/orange ember from a brilliant white flickering light...was the size of a beachball from my view point The distance covered that I saw was approximately 300-500 ft. It satyed on the same horizontal path from the earth surface until it disapeared, there was not an arch of any sort. There were no sounds at all to this "ball" ball like object appeared in my line of sight. Traveled east to west when I was facing south. Appeared directly over trees approximatly 500 ft from the ground running parrell. It remained visable for approximately 3 seconds fading from a brillant white to a glowing red ember to nothing. I do not remember seeing a trail. I thought it was a shooting star. I was standing under the far edge of a covered driveway. At the end of it\\\\\\\'s trajectory the o... bject widened significantly, appeared to twists, causing an apparent break in the train. It then appeared nearly square, moved several degrees. appeared to have another gap in the train, flared to the same wide, square shape and disappeared. I would estimate that the width of the object in the last second was as wide or wider than the crescent moon tonight. The entire trajectory from my location was straight down toward the horizon. I have seen fireballs in the past that have had a more distinct explosion but this still seemed to be a terminal flash. Appeared to be broken twice in the last few degrees before the fireball disappeared. Show more |

The main \\\\ Yesterday evening at about 5:59,... I saw a beautiful green fireball. From my perspective it was in the West, falling almost straight down (though it moved slightly from NW to SW.) It left a nice trail which included “sparks.” I heard no sound. I was struck by the intensity of the greenish color. Show more |

Viewing brilliant Venus out of my kitchen window a... fter I shortly awakened and started my day preparing breakfast. I was aware that the Geminids were displaying during this time. I saw no other Geminids or other meteors. It came generally from the direction of Castor, the radiant point of the Geminid shower, but the overhange of the roof blocked a broader view of the sky. Very green all the way. Since it was this green color, and I have estimated magnitudes of whitish or other color stars and comets before, my magnitude estimate was a little difficult since it was green. But seems to count as a fireball. I have seen yellow fireballs and other meteor showers before. A short train that followed the brighter head of the meteor for a few degrees, but disappeared as it traveled. It did not leave persistant traces over the track it travelled. Show more |

I have seen a "shooting star" before, which was in... a very starry, clear night. The shooting star was the same size/brightness of any other star. In this case I was driving before sunrise, and I would describe this as a very large, very bright, very green object in the sky that appeared out of nowhere, and was gone. It was impossible to miss. there may have been an increase in brightness before the object disappeared, but i am not sure. This body was moving faster than any other firebal... l I have ever seen. Came so quickly into my field of view (across my windshield/over my head) that I ducked. Very interesting! Very strong, bright trail, fragmenting as it passed just ahead of me traveling across my path from right to left. Pieces lit for only a moment after breaking off. Show more |

it was AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! as it trav... eled closer to the horizon, it broke off into 2. The first one was white, and had a clear tail trail, then it broke off into 2 balls, when it broke, the 2nd one turned into a greenish color It started out as a bright white light, then as it traveled it had a whitish green tail, and then it seemed to break off into 2 at the very end, which was when it turned green...the 2nd tail lasted a little bit longer than the host.
