Jim's Fireball Stuff

James Richardson
AMS Fireball Monitoring Program Coordinator

The below photographs show a smoke trail from the July 23, 2001, Pennsylvania fireball, photographed from south-cental Pennsylvania. Elton Jones is still in the process of obtaining more information and detailed measurements so that we can utilize this photograph in our analysis. We also do not have permission from the photographer to place this up for public consumption -- although he has given permission for "scientific purposes."

Looking toward the north-west, the smoke trail remnants can just be made ont in this non-enhanced image above the trees in the foreground.

A contrast enhanced and cropped version of the photograph on the left, showing the smoke trail in much better detail. Note the five seperate "clumps" in the trail, with a barely discernible line connecting the clumps which are closer together.
