New Fireball spotted in Midwest

- 198 Comments - In: ,

The mid west has witnessed two major fireball events in less than 2 days.

On Thursday (September 26th), the AMS has received more than 730 reports of a large fireball around 7:05 am local time. Witnesses from Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri and Wisconsin reported a bright light moving across the morning sky.

The second Fireball occurred last night September 27th around 11:30 PM local time over central Ohio. The AMS has tagged over 450 witness reports to this event so far and there are still over 400 awaiting review.

Below is a heat map of the sightings. Click the image to view the AMS Fireball Event Map for this fireball.

The fireball was caught on two NASA all sky cameras operated by Bill Cooke of the Meteoroid Environmental Office.

Here is what appears to be a video of the event:

This event has quickly become the AMS’s 3rd most reported event of all time. The Indiana event that occurred earlier in the morning attained the second place spot, but its possibly that title will not be held for very long. Hundreds of witnesses continue to report this latest event in Ohio.

Around 11:30pm September 27, 2013 I had just pulled in my driveway, got out of my truck and was admiring the clearity of the stars in the night sky, when a very large blue streak crossed the sky I’m front of me. It was traveling south to north in the eastern sky. It lasted a full 1-1/2 seconds and seemed to have a vapor trail that stayed in the sky for another 10 seconds.

I saw this in New Baltimore, Michigan on Friday night ~ September 27, 2013! It was a yellow/orange ball that popped out of nowhere high in the Northeastern Sky (Over Lake St. Clair) which was trailing the most amazingly wide and long tail of a turquoise / green / purple color. It fell in somewhat of an arch and seemed to somewhat burst and then was gone! I was just sitting on my porch, looking straight ahead talking on my phone and “poof” there it was out of nowhere and gone in seconds! I could not believe what I saw ~ my legs went numb, my heart was pounding, and I lost my breath. Awesome, yet somewhat spooky!

i saw this fireball on the night of 29th sept.in Isoka a small town in Northen Zambia -Africa it did not fit the disciption of an eclipse.

          • amsadmin 11 years ago

Eclipses and fireballs are completely different celestial phenomena. Eclipses are the obscuration of one celestial body by another either by the a shadow or the disk itself. A fireball is a larger than normal meteor seen as a streak of light in the sky.

            I hope this helps!

We saw this in Brown City Michigan, just as described above. My husband and I were sitting on the porch star gazing and talking. We were not expecting it, my jaw dropped! It was also seen in Attica, Michigan. My tribe was holding a Native ceremony, when our gatekeeper spotted it, so did two others. They consider this a blessing for our tribe….

I was driving home from the Red Wings game and about 11:30 PM just north of Monroe, Mi.. We did not see a fire ball, however, the sky did light up green for 3-4 seconds. Looked like lightning with no bolt, we thought this was weird since it was a perfectly clear night.

We saw this from a friends cabin in central Ohio (Greer, Ohio- near Mohican state park). It was traveling from south western sky approximately 240 degrees azimuth. It was first visible about 45 degrees elevation and ended around 30 degrees elevation about 300 degrees azimuth. I’ve seen numerous meteors but nothing as bright or intense as this. There was a smoke trail in the sky several minutes after the event. It was cobalt blue with a bright white edges with a tinge of green and was breaking into numerous pieces… INCREDIBLE!

        Hello,
I saw your report online for the 2012 meteor that was seen to disperse over central Ohio. I live in the Cincinnati area & our family will be in your area come early Spring.
From approximately the entrance to Mohican State Park where would you say the 2013 meteor broke apart? We will be looking for downed pieces as soon as weather n snow are better. Your help in finding the approximate area you think it would of come down would be of great help. Even if it is in miles. Please contact me at my email of

Thank you for any help you can give.

Although we did not see anything in the sky (we were watching TV in the house at the time), we heard and felt a large boom – so significant, in fact, that the concussion shook and rattled our house. I inquired on Facebook to see if any friends experienced a similar situation in the area, and many who were outside did report seeing the object, but many others reported experiencing the concussion. It did sound like a sonic boom, but I had never experienced one at that time of the evening.

I may have seen the same meteor just after 11:30 pm friday night while driving south on Riverview dr north of Parchment Mi. It was in the eastern sky from Kalamazoo Mi. It appeared to break apart while burning up and it was very bright My best guess is that struck the atmosphere over Battle Creek Mi. at at a steep angle the trail only lasted a second or so. It could not have been more than 40 miles away because I was in a ravine looking uphill, at about 35 degrees.

On May 20, 2017, coming home from Ann Arbor, Michigan heading to Parchment, this huge Orange and Yellow fireball hovered and exploded in front of the car, we were heading north on Riverview, by Patterson, my daughter from Vegas was driving, while the oldest daughter was in the back seat, myself in the passenger seat. The sound was loud.
My chest felt a sensation, the two daughters said, they felt tingling in their fingers. The object disappeared. We were by the graveyard, it was raining and my daughter from Vegas said someone was riding a bike on the opposite side of the street of the graveyard. Far as we know, there was no residue, we did not stop, we just kept going. We are still in disbelief.

My husband and I were driving home on Tunnel Hill Road, New Lexington at 11:33 p.m. It was really dark and then all of a sudden there was a really bright light which made the entire sky light up. It was very strange…looked like an explosion white/ blue. We had never seen anything like this before. We looked for a trail of smoke and rolled the window down to listen for sounds but did not see or hear anything else. We thought there was a plane crash or an explosion at the strip mine we were near. It was very strange. This was in Perry County Ohio.

My husband and I were driving home to Circleville, Ohio, after attending a football game in McConnelsville. Around 11:30 p.m. in New Lexington, the sky above the treeline lit up bluish-white for only a second. We were perplexed since there were no storms in the area and we knew the flash did not flicker like lightning and was more blue in color than lightning usually appears.

We were driving home in Marietta Ohio at about 11:30pm. We had stopped at a stop sign under tree cover so we didn’t get to see the actual fireball, but the sky did light up. I thought that it couldn’t be lightning because no rain had been forecast. The thought of a meteor crossed my mind, so I was glad to see the reports this morning to confirm my experience. I had just put my things in the passenger side, and was walking around to the driver side from the rear of blazer, when a bluish light shone down on me. I looked up and saw it alluminated the tree directly over head and was gone. Heard someone shout ” What the the heck was that?” and looked around and saw no one, so I assumed it was someone playing with some kind of flash light. Later when I was at work (Security Officer for Fed-ex at Rickenbacker Airbase), someone was leaving the security area and mentioned the light, and how everyone around the planes looked into the sky, and if I heard what the flash of light was, that everyone had seen it in the sky. Then I wondered just what was it I saw at home getting in my car going to work? This may explain it.

My son was pulling into our driveway after the football game – it was around 11:30-11:35. I heard him outside screaming, “OMG!! Mom!” So I ran out and he was going on about some meteor racing from the south to the north with a bluish hue and a orangish tail. He said it was so fast – but beautiful. We live in NE Ohio (Niles). When my husband got home at 1:15, he said he seen a large bluish flash in the western sky as he was driving west on I-90 (coming out of Erie, Pa). He didn’t get to see the whole meteor however.

I happened to be outside, in Munfordville, KY and looking toward the sky in that direction. I had thought the color of the streak was blue to aquamarine in color, and thought it might be a firework, but the angle and presentation of it didn’t make sense to be a firework. I had hoped someone else saw it so I could determine its origin, because it was unique compared to other things I have seen before in the night sky.

At appoximatley 3:00pm daytime-central over NAPERVILLE, ILLINOIS I witnessed a white fireball that temporarily equaled the brightness of the afternoon sun. I saw this while driving on the way to a doctors appointment, and mentioned the sighting to the two secretaries in my doctors office. The fireball left a white daytime condensation trail, and the fireball at its peak brightness, and with an initial western bearing trajectory, made an abrupt southernly turn of almost 90 degrees, and clearly fell straight to the ground somewhere in central illinois. I have been an amateur astronomer for 15 years, have been witness to hundreds of night time white meteors streaking across the sky, and several daytime green meteors. However this is the first time I have ever seen a white fireball in the daylight atmosphere and the first time I have ever seen a meteor make an abrupt 90 degree trajectory turn. I am absolutley certain that this fireball is now a meteorite, and on the ground somewhere within 100 miles south of Naperville illinois. It did not create a bollide, and is likely one solid piece. It is almost certainly related to the event witnessed over ohio, for some type of sporatic meteor shower.

i live in the city limits of dayton, oh. was out on my deck with some old buddies and one of them and myself happened to be looking at the right part of the sky when it happened. from my vantage point it was moving roughly from the south to the north, and downward at about maybe a 20 degree angle up from the horizon. very bright, very spooky.

immediate thought was a large firework, but couldn’t be that cuz no sound. then thought maybe a plane exploding/crashing, but seemed to large AND distant to be man-made. then figured, meteor or comet or whatever. which apparently it was. i’ve seen the occasional shooting star once or twice, and satellites, but this was huge and super-bright!

I was at a Walmart in Ebensburg PA with my daughter. It was late and quiet, not a lot of other people around to witness it. I was unloading groceries into the back of my van and I just happened to grab a bag out of my cart and turned around to place the bag in my van when I saw this amazing bluish green light, light up the sky just above the tree line at the back of the parking lot. It only lasted a second or two before the light went below the trees leaving a yellowish trail behind it. If I had turned around a second later I would have missed it. It was an amazing thing to witness. It’s hard to believe it was so far away, it was so big and bright I thought it was something that happened maybe 10 miles away not 200 miles!

I was traveling south on HWY E approaching HWY 28 in Eastern Wisconsin, Sheboygan county, and around 10:30 PM central time I noticed a Blue/Green fireball to the South-East, the fireball burst after about one second or so in a bright, possibly white, colored explosion. A yellow trail remained for about a half second or so. The trajectory seemed to be upper left to lower right and the angle relative to the horizon appeared to be about 75 degrees. However, it was difficult to tell if it was moving toward or away from me due to the predominantly vertical trajectory.

I reported seeing this meteor last night and later found out that people I know died from the fire it caused to a house. An elderly couple was killed near my home after the meteor crashed near their home setting the house on fire. Flames were 70 ft high and the couple died of smoke inhalation in Peebles, Ohio.

Although eyewitnesses saw the meteor crash to the ground their the fire chief is saying there is no impact crater so it wasn’t the meteor that caused it. Do meteors always cause impact craters especially if they are small and hit structures?

Saw a VERY bright fireball/meteor traveling west to east. Easily the brightest I’ve
EVER seen in my lifetime! Beautiful colors, green, blue and a dull red/dark pink.
Lasted several seconds, but was driving…

I live outside Shelby Ohio, and I was driving home from Mickey Mart when the whole sky lit up bright blue. I looked out the window and saw a huge ball flashing what I saw to be blue and purple. It was gone within a few seconds, but it left a bright burn streak in the sky that glowed orange/brown that stayed there for quite a while. I had no idea what it was until I got home the next morning and my Mom told me there was a huge meteor siting that was all over the news. Until I heard about this I was a bit scared because I had no idea what it was.

I still have the text messages that show the 8:15 pm time that I sent to several people asking if they saw it. This is odd considering most of the reports claim an 11:30 pm sighting and noises. I saw it too, last night, from Springfield, Ohio, sometime after 11 PM. It was in the eastern sky, traveling at a low angle, seemed too large for a shooting star and was a pale orange color. We were at Bowling Green Kentucky last night 9/28/2013 when a meteorite with a long tail crossed the sky right about nightfall. NOT closer to midnight!! It was clearly visible and very bright for a little over ten seconds before it finally disappeared over the horizon. It’s trajectory seemed to be due Northwest since the sun was setting to our direct front/slightly right (about 2 o’clock directionally).
There were several witnesses to this as the stadium was full of observers.

I was in Warren, MI. It was sometime between 11pm and midnight. I was standing in my brother’s driveway facing east when something very bright flashed to my right. It was bright enough to illuminate the entire southern sky and appeared to be mostly white with a bluish hue. I turned to face it and saw a trail of bright yellow that was clearly fire. I knew it was no ordinary shooting star. The entire event lasted perhaps one second. I took it to be a large object that had penetrated our upper atmosphere and landed fairly close. That it seems to have struck somewhere in Ohio is consistent with my observation.

My daughter ran out of the house as I saw it because she saw the sky light up and asked what happened and I told her I thought a meteor just went by. It was so close and huge in the sky. I was truly amazed and in awe as I have never seen anything like it. I am glad it was confirmed and I wasn’t imagining it. My husband turned only in time to see the remnants of the trail. My husband and I woke up to our dogs barking -more like howling, incessantly- at close to 3a.m., September 30, 2013, in Nova Scotia. The sky was mostly clear, with only patchy fog, and to the north, we saw a very bright light -no movement, no sound -round, big. We seem to have caught the last of it, but it was very bright and seemed -yes, big, when we saw it for a moment, and we thought if the dogs had seen it -looking like the moon, only in a strange place, for the few minutes they were barking, before we got there, well, bingo, I would’ve barked if I saw that, We almost wondered if it was a supernova. -I made a point to get up and look outside again tonight at about the same time, but it’s raining here -dogs are snoozing, happily -and sensibly, and there are no second moon-like things out tonight. We’re wondering if anyone else saw this, or knows what it might have been.

I just seen a very bright light with a green trail going across the sky. Almost like a giant shooting star with a green trail.

I’ve been looking for anybody who had seen this for months now. we were in a completely pitch black field night fishing in Portsmouth, Ohio, and all of the sudden the entire sky lit up. looked up in just enough time to see the tail end of this crazy comet. but the weirdest part was, the hole it burnt into the atmosphere was there for almost 5 minutes. it very, very slowly just faded away. never seen anything like it before in my life, and probably never will again. glad I found something about this ’cause it was really bugging me.

Thursday, 8:s30 PM local time. Southern California. Meteorite directly overhead. Came from the East, traveling towards West. Broke up when exactly overhead. Sky was crystal clear. Meteorite seems so close. First time I’ve ever seen one break up. Wow!

In the early morning (around 2am) of 03/29/2015, while filling up our wood burning furnace outside, my husband watched a beautiful turquoise/neon green meteor come down. He also heard the impact as it hit the east side of North Mountain in the beautiful Deerfield Valley area where we live. He had never seen one and was absolutely amazed.

Not sure if I should be commenting here considering that Iā€™m about 5 years late, but I figured hey! I saw this, might as well add my experience. I was leaning out of my bedroom window in Troy, Ohio that night to have a smoke and suddenly I saw a bright green light in the sky. It traveled for maybe a few seconds before getting brighter and then disappearing. I only ever managed to find one other person who saw it, until I decided to google about it tonight.
