It seems certain now that the fireball reported on Sunday January 27, 2013, near 21:30 (9:30pm) EST over a large swath of the eastern USA was the re-entry of the Russian satellite Cosmos 1484. This satellite was launched in 1983 and lasted just short of 30 years before meeting its fiery demise over the eastern USA. The American Meteor Society has received 35 eyewitnesses of this re-entry ranging from New York south to Georgia and South Carolina. There have been no reports of any debris from this satellite reaching the ground. Individual reports may be viewed in the 2013 AMS Fireball Table Refer to event #206 for 2013.

Delta Air Lines flight 1485 was south bound between New York Laguardia and Orlando Int’l on January 27th. At 9:22 PM EST, the cockpit crew witnessed a fireball with multiple projectiles high in the southeastern sky. The event was sustained for approximatley one minute. Other aircraft on Washington Center frequency also reported witnessing the event.
9:48 PM, PST 2/10/2013: Nice meteor with luminescent dust shedding nearly straight down illuminated orange through +/- 10 degrees above horizon before going dark, near precisely SE (135 degrees true) from perspective at Lodi, CA 95242.
